Title: Borehole DIY
Post by: Mphunter on December 17, 2014, 11:05:54 am
I am after some borehole advice please.
I have a 20 acres smallholding just south of Tavistock, Dartmoor with some barns, which could be developed in the future.
I am after getting a borehole. I would like to do it myself. (Apart from the drilling)
Is there any guide? I understand I need a pump and a pressure vessel UV treatment and possible other filtration depending on water quality. This all seems readily available

Do I go for a 5” hole or 6”?
Do I get a glass filter back fill?
I have been told I should get 6 gallons/min (27L/min)

It might be worth trying Aquasource down here on the right side of the Tamar. They did ours last year for about 1/5 of what folk up country seem to be getting quoted. The also supplied and fitted all the gear and pump etc for vastly less then i could have gotten them. And they did a bloody great job too.

So what sort of money did it cost? I was quoted about £10k 4 years ago, which seemed a bit steep to me.
How far down did you have to drill? My water table was about 25 m down.

£2800+vat all in. They went about 30m down if my memory serves me right.

That sounds amazingly good and do-able.

We were vaguely quoted about 2 grand a while back but can't remember the depth.  It was a remote field we own on granite and trap stone (ancient volcano). They didn't seem to think this would be an issue. I think this was without the pumping gear. A neighbour has just done one and I think he bought a cheap Clarke borehole pump. Seems to work.

As for filters it depends what you want to use the water for along with what's in the water to start with.

Get the filtration correct from day 1 and it will save you money in the long term.
I personally would only use UV for the drinking water element of the supply.
If you wish to supply other people with your water there are strict regulations, dependant on numbers daily testing can be required at £47 a go I think the nearest lab to you is at countess weir Exeter.
