I took the boys for a ride this morning, they were told once we got back they could change their riding boots for wellies, put their waterproofs on and play, but told quite clearly they were to stay out of the muddy puddles until they had changed. However, whilst I was putting the shetlands' rugs back on, they got themselves into the biggest, filthiest puddle they could find.
I told them they would have to clean their own boots because they had been silly, it seemed like a good idea at the time. It was meant to be a punishment, but they absolutely loved it, and instead of just 2 pairs of dirty jodphurs and 2 pairs of dirty jodphur boots, I have 2 pairs of clean jodphur boots, but 2 full sets of soaking filthy clothes, a sticky floor, 4 soaking towels used to dry the flooded, now sticky, floor, and mucky water splashed all up the utility room wall.
Feeling a bit stupid!

But at least their boots are clean! The joys of motherhood!

I would say it sounds like a fabulous morning and you deserve a medal for being a fabulous mum!! x

Oh the joys of small boys ::) If you want another couple of helpers I could lend you mine as they are driving me nuts at the moment. They are well practiced at flooding rooms and tramping mud everywhere though less good at agreeing to clean up

In future, tell them to clean their boots outside.

The problem was, they were SO filthy, lots of hot water was required, and as it was freezing outside, I didn't want them getting wet all over again outdoors. In their defence, they are only 4 (only just) and 2. But I think next time, I might just put them in the field with the ponies!

Yes, this sounds like the sort of Sunday morning I expect to have in a few years time !
Muddy boys, filthying the house, having been outside doing something fun, and now learning about how life works. Good on you fo getting them out and teaching about how to clean and look after themselves.
I'm sure it's much easier to leave them in their jammies in front of tv cartoons..?
I agree you do deserve a medal for the endless clearing up.

What I am rally worried about is when I have a 4 year old, a 3 year old, a baby and 1200 ewes lambing - I probably won't give a monkeys about a bit of mud on the wall then!

Better muck ,mud & laughter than I-pods & I-pads which so often stifle brain development and make antisocial zombies out of their users

Such a lovely heart warming story. :) and a hug for you

Very true. It takes me back to when mine were children and the summer holidays seemed to consist of a bath full of wet clothes twice every day where they were playing in the sea or making rafts in the burn. Happy children though.

I usually have four grandchildren at weekends, seven eight, nine and ten. Two go home to gales of laughter at the state of them and the other two to" All clothes off in the porch and straight in the shower" (my SIL) and a look of distaste.
Which children do you think are happier? ::)
