Have 17 acres of rough heather grazing land, would be worth buying some blackfaces to graze there until the summer. Dont mind if i dont make a profit, might put them in lamb too.

That sounds ok to me but you'd have to watch your stocking rate given that its rough heather as you would likely have to supplement the feeding with hay if the weather turns bad this winter.
The other options is to let it out to a local farmer - no £ outlay for you and you may get a bare minimum rent.

How good are your fences? I had some blackies to graze a few years ago, they scattered at the first hint of snow - a few stayed awol for weeks despite regular sightings, 2 others came home in a police van....

If you're not used to keeping sheep then letting grass keep over the winter would look a good option - you can observe and learn and maybe buy some store lambs to take on through next Winter.
