Title: Goat buying fail.
Post by: Steph Hen on November 02, 2014, 07:31:36 pm
Went to buy three boer goats today. :excited: They weren't right so didn't come home. :'(
Two weren't pure, they weren't a year old, they were two. Which I could live with.
The pure one had blisters/scabs round its mouth and all up its nose.
One had was so lame 'because it had had its hoof clipped this morning' that it held its hoof up the whole time. On inspection, it was red hot, swollen and full of stinking pus. It also seemed thinner than the others by a good bit.
The third had no ear tags.

I really liked the man and his yard looked great, sounded so genuine. What a waste of over 550 miles driving!!!

On reflection, Wasn't happy when he said "drop the back down, I'll pop this one on first". Before I'd even looked over the stable door. I realised after that it was the lame one he had in hold of.
Angry, disappointed.

Well done for not getting them. May be worth a phone call to the local trading standards animal health - at least 2 potential offences there.  Good luck in quest to find boer goats

And you probably didn't even get as far as asking to see their CAE certificate and if possible CLA/Johne's ones....

You did the right thing - it takes some guts to say "no" if you have driven that far and the seller was probably not expecting it.

However - there are Boer breeders in Aberdeenshire - why not speak to them?

Thanks for the support. It was really hard turning them down. I've wanted goats for a decade and had them right there! My OH was/is totally supportive and keeps saying I've done the right thing. Just keep mulling it over. I wouldn't know where to start with trading standards, I feel like I don't want anything more to do with this particular experience. Also, I did quite like the man- looked up his business and has really good reviews - maybe it was just accidental oversight?

I had a go at tracking down someone to sell me some boer goats months ago and drew a blank. Will start again I guess. I know about CAE testing, and he'd told me that was all done, but now realise I have no idea what I'm actually looking for -printed certificate/vet signed paper???

That is such a shame, Steph hen but well done for sticking to your guns. He probably thought you were bound to buy them as you had traveled so far. Good luck with your hunt for some good goats. I'm sure you'll find some.

Please do contact Trading Standards for the sake of the poor old goats! Yes, he may have come over as a "lovely man" but so do all con men, it's how they make their living. And comments via the internet could have been put on by his family and friends!
If you are worried about come-back pm me his details and I will do it. X
I'm sure there must be a Boer breeders site out there somewhere.

If anything comes of it he'll know it was me though. And do trading standards really care about such low level stuff?

If that had been me I think I would probably have bought them just because of all those miles travelled and then it sounds like I would have bought myself a whole heap of trouble.
You definitely did the right thing although I am sure it was a tough decision.

I morally want to report this to trading standards but don't want any come back. I spoke to defra this morning and although it would all be confidential, he'd know it was me.
I'm also pretty sure if someone from trading standards came out he would present three beautiful goats and say he had no idea what the problem was. So I'm not going to. Sorry.

I will give my name and address. What is that saying ....... Evil will only prevail whilst good men say nothing???

next time ask for copies of any reg/ health/cae certifcates via email. a serious breeder will be happy to co-operate, and as most things are done on-line now, its no big deal.

I've manned up and reported him. Already feel nervous that something will come of it. But you are absolutely right that this is the right thing to do.

Cuckoo, thanks for your pm, will be in touch when I have some time and have had a proper think about your suggestions.

Shygirl, thanks for this advice.

Wow. I had arrangement last year to buy some BT goats from - well, far away! To older does and two 2013 kid females. Kids unfortunately broke their neck (both!) so I have decided to leave the does for mating, I have been offered mating for free, only 100 quid for 6 months keep of the does.
The both had a billy kid each. My OH went to pick them up very recently and the does come up as: 2013 goatlings!!! Not registered as well (they ment to be, and I have paid the price for regstered ones!) Other 5 goats I have paid for (150 per kid female, 200 for kid male, one of "my" males... broke the neck!!!)  BTW I'm in Poland right now where we are moving our stud and holding... so my OH is in the charge. He said... good job you didn't see the conditions where the goar were... as you would go mad! Shed with no windows, mess in the yard, etc.

By the end of the day, breeders made ME to pay for goats' registrations as well fo transfers!!! As you can imagine, BGS Secretary was in a state of little shock!!! 125 for all of it on TOP of 1200 I have paid already to breeders... Two 2013 females and 5 kids including my own one...

Eco gypsy, that's awful.  There are some very dodgy people out there.

EcoGypsy, what a carry on! I feel sorry and angry for you. Please say this was in a different region and couldn't have been the same person? It's a carry on. Three goats breaking their necks? Older does going missing? And then the registration issue - How can such people sleep at night?

shygirl It wasnt explained to me  :(

Mad Woman, Steph Han now we have worse issue, the 2014 kids are registered as progeny of two 2013 goatlings!!! FIVE in total!

As regarding to paperwork all kids are bred from my females, I have overpaid 3x £150 for nanny kids and £200 for male kid = £650. This is rather serious money, not mentioning trip from Cambs to Wales and back, another £100 in diesel! Kids are much smaller than others, 2-3 months younget British Toggenburgs, my vet believes they probably never been wormed. Feet never trimmed as well.

So we have made a decision. We are going to notify Trading Standards, RSPCA and DEFRA, and escalate the case in the Small Claims Court.

What a shame, that goat breeder is a rather active member of this forum  :( :( :(

Eco gypsy - sounds like a right farse! Hope you can get something sorted with your court action!

Trading standards decided it was an animal welfare issue and sent a vet in... Three weeks later. Apparabntly all animals were fine. He had several premises so who knows if they even saw the right goats?
