I'm sure Islay will be a great mum - she looked fabulous on Wednesday. She must be glad to get rid of the weight though - 11 at 500g, roughly is a lot of weight to be carrying around. Lovely that you've got a mix of boys and girls and colours.

Hi Sandy. Calum pointed me towards this thread. I'm very interested in one of your pups and would like to get in early and show my interest. Atm I've got a 3 year old black lab collie X called Hitch and would love another addition to the family.

You won't get Sandy or Steve till they have caught up with their shut eye - I left there at 3 am last night so got a few hours before going back up this morning to go for puppy food and chicken food for them.  Steve had to work today too but they have no-one in the B & B tonight so I guess they are ZZZ ing now!

You gotta be joking?  ::) 5 Brittany pups is enough for any woman(or man!  ;)).  If you don't believe me come and see them!  They are leaping about like mad things.  Just wait though - 7 weeks from now Sandy will be wishing she had never seen a Labrador!!!! Let alone 13 of them!

13 is a huge number for a first litter. She looks like she's being a brilliant mum though. But in 6 weeks, she won't want to see her babies much!

If my calculations are right (a rare occurrence), there are 11 pups, mother and uncle to make the 13. Personally I can't imagine giving birth to even one thingy let alone 11 of them!

Post by: ballingall on December 19, 2009, 10:04:31 am
Ahhh I saw the 13 and got confused. 11 is still a lot as well. My collie only had 9 pups for her first litter, and that was hard work!

Beth, Sandy & Steve have just been to see my pups - rushed off a few mins ago as the weather is turning so i must off out to the shops before the hill gets too bad to get up it.  Mine are quite boisterous now and two of them will be here for another couple of weeks yet, with two others another week after that and my own boy staying here.  I think Sandy and Steve got an idea of what 11 will be like at that age.

You're welcome any time - except tomorrow!  With a  bit of luck I should have all the family here - 2 nephews, their wives and daughters, son, daughter, son-in-law, 3 grandchildren, and my sister and brother-in-law.  Now where did I put that vodka shot - I'll need it - 5 pups, 4 dogs,a cat, 3 ducks and a drake, 9 hens and a cockerel, and a partridge in a - oops I forgot to plant one :-)

I've finally got a lighter schedule for the coming week, so I'll give you a poke in a couple of days when I know when I'll be free and see if you match up.

On the family note: I will be VERY disappointed if I don't hear you answered the door to them with 2/3rd empty vodka bottle in hand!

Just as well none of us were on the vodka tonight, although us yins at home could have done with it.  My sister and brother-in-law took almost 6 hours to come here from Inverness.  My nephew and his family went home to East Calder, having seen his Mum and Dad for about an hour;  and took 2 and a half hours to get home, with us checking the weather websites and webcams and phoning them with updates so they could avoid certain routes; my son went a bit later to Paisley and it took him almost 3 and half hours. The two Mums here were just about having kittens let alone puppies!  Bloody snow!
Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!
Post by: sandy on December 21, 2009, 09:13:42 am
Bloody snow, only nice to play in if you don't have to go anywhere...I dread going out as I am petrified of falling......Steve has to cycle in it so hope he is OK.

Back to Islay and her pups...I have been having to tempt her with chicken and stock mixed in with her puppy food, and we also had to drag her out for a wee but today she got up by hersself and went out and devoured a big bowl full of chicken and puppy food mixed with the chicken stock and she loves the Goats milk.....I am feeding her 4 times a day at the moment so we bough a few chickens and cooked them and boiled up the bones etc for stock and also got some cheap mince for her to mix with her puppy food, otherwise, the pups are fine.....we are going to order the expensive cadge and it also looks sturdy and can be used for other things...ironicly someone rang up to  book for a week after Christmas but they do not want breakfast otherwise I would have to have said No to them...we need the money to support our growing family.....anyway all is well, Isaly seems very relaxed when Ben is in the room, he just looks out the courner of his eye at the pups and is being spoiled by staying with me most of the time.

Nearly came in past this afternoon when I was at the Post Office then the Co-op but it started to snow and get dark so just turned and headed for home.  We had Helen's black lab dog here and Neil's Springer as well.  Belle was a little protective but they weren't that interested in the puppies so she decided she didn't really need to kill them. ;D ;D ;D

Post by: sandy on December 22, 2009, 07:48:36 am
:(Woke up at 4.00am due to load noises from the pups only to find one dead under her and one trapped behind her although that one was fine.THe heat pad was also out the bed so the pups were getting a bit cold, I suppose that's one reason they got under her. I have now put her in another bed wiht roll bars although I doubt it would have made nay difference to the one under her!!! Now I am worried that she will do it again, with 10 pups now, a lot for her to look after...fingers crossed, I shall be on tender hooks until they are at least 3 weeks old!

Awww sorry to hear Sandy, thats such a shame. Still she's doing very well- its really hard for her with a first litter and there being so many of them.

Glad to hear she likes the gots milk- you're welcome to some more.

THink its OK although not even sure they would have saved her as she was underneath, me and steve then got up at 4.00 sorted out hte bed and one started squealing again and it was under Isaly so we took it out, God knows why she dosn't get up when they squeal ???Anyway they all look strong, one of the yellow males is getting a big boy!!

But they don't for some reason - Belle didn't either and she is an experienced mum.  You just have to jump up as soon as you hear a squeak.  I didn't sleep a complete night for a week after Belle had hers.  I'd settle down then I'd hear a squeak only to find one had just fallen asleep and dropped off it's perch but was still hungry.  i got used to waking up wide a wke and being able to go straight back to sleep again.  Mind you I do that with the trains anyway.

Congrats on the safe arrival of the pups Sandy. Lovely pics, mum and babies look so sweet.  ;D

Dont beat yourself up about the 'lost' pup as I have a 4ft by 4 ft whelping box with roll bars and when I was asked to whelp a rescue bitch for the Golden rescue she had 13 pups. As is the norm with me I was with the bitch 24/7 for 3 weeks, sleeping at the side of the box etc and the first night I decided to go to bed to sleep the bitch lay on one and smothered it!!

So what Im saying is it may have happened whatever whelping space you had or whatever you did.

Thanks 13, wow!!! I have been with Islay most of the day and night now and just herd a pup cry, Islay sat and just froze, I told her to stand up and tried to lift her but she was so stubborn, of course I did lift her off but it upset her a bit,not sure what approach to take...last night she rolled onto the pups several times, then they make a row when they cannot find the teat so I am  up and down although mananged a good 2hrs without either me wanting the loo, the fridge waking me up or the pups!! The box I have now is 3ft by 27" I shall be shattered until they are big enough, then the work is different, just ordered a very large puppy pen to contan the chunky labs!!
Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!
Post by: doganjo on December 23, 2009, 10:05:05 pm
You'll have your work cut out to keep that lot clean!  My five have their 4 foot by 4 foot pen enlarged out to half the kitchen every evening as well as various times during the day, and although I try to pick up the poos as they are done, if I just miss one it's all over the place, mixed up with the shredded paper, and the wees.  When I shut them back in with their supper I have to completely scrub and fumigate the kitchen floor.  God knows what 10 labs will be like - twice the poos, twice the wees, twice the size. ::) ::)  But not twice the energy of Brittanys ;).  This is most likely my last litter as I'm not breeding from Belle again and there isn't a bitch pup for me, but it's an absolute bind having them in the winter.  I'd never do it again.  It's the best time for working folk though, they can get them started early January and most of their training in the summer when its close season, a couple of working tests in the summer, then maybe get their first trial at a year old. Quite good for showing too as there's nothing much between now and 2nd May(they're 6 months then) except Crufts. I reckon my time is worth 50p an hour breeding pups, and no profit.

Sweet puppy! How are Islay and Ben?
Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!
Post by: sandy on December 28, 2009, 11:45:11 am
Islay appears to be very happy having Ben around, Ben takes a peep at the pups and Islay is fine, he knows she is the boss so leaves them well alone only to take a sneaky peek occasionaly, I think he will love them when they are a bit older.....he is turing into a great dog, Steve said his recall is great now!! I am sure it's just the car that triggers off him not comming back. I can also see that some of the pups eyes are begining to open and hear a little bark occasionaly.

Nearly time for worming urh!!!! ALL pups have at least doubled thier birth weight, ones weight dropped a bit today and she was winging a little last night so hope she is not ill, she looks OK, not too thin just a bit sleepy, not surpriing, although I even got a good nights sleep last night. We are monitering the pups feeding and thier eyes appear to be cracking open a bit, you can see better with the yellow pups, the black ones are less defined. Isaly is eating HUGE amounts, I will get some more puppy food tomorrow just in case it gets hard to out. More enquiries last night and I am in the process of registering them with the Kennel Club, I have all the names ready and am pleased, fingers crossed they are all doing well, we will speak to the vet and get those worming potions.....

All pre fixed with weeshires , a combination of the shires in Lord of the rings and the wee county, clackmannan.
Yellow males are Gandalf and Gondor, yellow females, Rohan and Moria
Black males are Frodo, Bilbo and Pippin, Black females, Arwen, Gladrial and Eowyn, off to the vets now...

Back with a coffee and a bit more awake!!! Took one of the little males to the vets to get checked out as he lost weight yesterday and has not been suckling and , he is OK with the bottle (thanks Anne) feeding so we are now feeding him ourselves. the vet said he was a strong healthy dog and gave him a shot of antibiotic just in case..when weighed he had put on some weight, so, more time with the pups..love it really!!

And still lots of names left for the next litter...

Some are place names such as Rohan and Gondor, so I have loads of choice not too keen on the baddies although like thier names, if we run out Steve wants Star Wars.....also there are some great names in Harry Potter......then of course they could be named after all the members on the forum, loads to choose from ::)

We had 2 kittens when the Olympics were in Atlanta Georgia, so we called one Atlanta and the other Georgia, Atlanta ran off due to a Foster Child!!! but I am sure I saw her living in a house near some years ago, Gergia had to be put to sleep about 6 years ago due to kidney failure, he was a lovley cat.
I am now worried about a Female pup, although she has only lossed a tiny bit but she seems in pain, I fed her earlier and she slowly had some  milk, now she yelps and has her mouth open when anyone goes near to her, including her mum, Islay will not even lck her, that worries me!!!!! maybe it is just a wind, or maybe something else, she was fine...the others are all really well now, sucking for the olympics!!!! I am off to bed as I shall watch her most of the night, she is on the heat pad whereas all the others are with mum..mum just had nearly a quater of a chicken (cooked) and piles of puppy food!!!!!

THe pups are getting very mobile and are starting to stand up, thats funny, some have little bits of eyes opening and one of the tiny's is so tough and getting a little podge, she is a yellow girl and will be pretty as she has black around her eyes and nose whereas the other Yellows have pink...I shall take a video soon, the last ones I did you could hear me swearing in the background :-[ :-[, I had the camera for a while and only just found the focus any way...I'm off to the vets if we make it through the night!!!

The pups were a week early and normally the viable date is 6 days maximum so it is quite possible that her lungs were not fully developed - just like a prem baby.  I'm not sure there is anything that can be done for such a puppy even if you had known earlier what might be wrong.  Does your vet know they were so premature?  he may have some suggestions in case any of the others appear ill.

Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!

As they are difficult to identify, even with the tippex, it may have been the one that died that has been crying on and off!! Hope all the rest are OK as even the firl who died had put on weight, just lost some the day before she died, she seemed in pain as she made a noise when others cam near to her and Islay would not clean her...a sign she knew she was ill :'( We both had trouble sleeping last night, although the pups were quiet and are getting little charactors, trying to walk around. GOing to register them now.

i am sorry for your loss.it might be some consolation to tell you we had a pup who was the runt and mum wouldnt have anything to do with her so my sister bottle fed her,she grew but she died at 6months as her kidneys failed, sometimes  the mums just know ,still hard though.

That is a consolation and I understand but you do feel sorry for these wee mites!!! At the vets there was a young man worried out of his wits with a little pup with a bent tail, he woke up to find one of his dead and was very upset...I suppose it's natures survival of the fittest!!!!! I hope no more deaths, we need a good start to the New Year!!

Don't want to put a dampener on but I don't register them till after they're properly weaned.  I have had a pup with megaesophagus - had to be put to sleep at 9 weeks after a traumatic 4 weeks of struggling to get him to keep food down.  Also have had pups coughing - that is a sign of heart problems, and that one ahd to be put to sleep to.  Best wait a few weeks - no rush anyway so long as you do it online before they are 8 weeks and ready to go.

Is that a picture of your Labrador scattybiker? It's sweet as we take the pups to the front room at night so Islay can stretch out and they feed from her not too far from the fire, we can watch and monito everything...after a weigh in tonight they all had put loads on and most of thier eyes are peeping open, looks cute!!! We have had so many enquiries already but if they don't all sell we will keep 2 and give the rest to Guide dogs for the Blind as I am sure they would pass.....

Was so nice last night, Ben is always fascinated by the pups but is very cautiouse around Isaly as she is the Boss. Isaly appears very relaxed to have Ben around and she lay feeding them on her rug and Ben came along sniffing and cleaning them as she lay back, all very sweet, the pups looked like they enjoyed the attention too....

No they got stuck at Berwick.  Car broke down as well so they called out the AA and fortunately had a friend near Berwick they could get to who is a mechanic.  They know what's wrong so hopefully will be here for lunch to day.  I've got all the documents ready anyway - except the KC reg - they take 2 weeks holiday in England I believe so my registration posted on the 17th won't be dealt with yet.  I'd have done it online if they didn't need the bobtail certificates!

Yes - a lot of them.  I haven't bothered putting collars on mine, but then they are all differently marked.  You know Labradors - all look the same on a dark night ;) ;D (except the yellows, of course)
Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!
Post by: sandy on January 05, 2010, 09:49:27 pm
I half expected ALL black pups and we did have 11, it's very hard to identify them and I had a pack of vet's paper colars but they came off, so I marked them in different places with Tippex, but Islay washed some of thier marks off so I was back to square 1...I think not being able to identify them led me to not noticing it was the same pup moaning and not feeding too well, although she did put on weight until the day before she died...anyway, I thought cat colars have elastic and are small so should be OK...they have been just the j ob and will expand quite a bit, even though Labs have fat necks!!!!! I have a sweet video and not sure how to post it other than putting the cold...anyone know?

Tonight they are all in the lounge with a BIG fire started by the remains of the Christmas tree. Bless the little things, they wobbled out, had some milkies for Mummy, then went over to the newspaper I put for them and did thier poo's and wee's.......I gave gave them more solid foods today and they woofed it all down, the Yellow Male I call Gondor, ate loads and loads and still stuck to mummy like a limpet...he wil be one big boy!!!! although they are all catching up and look very cute, in fact a Black Male may be the biggest, his name is Bilbo....anyway, the first of the viewings is on Friday weather permitting....and I hope to have the pen, not sure what excuse they will make up when it still dose not arrive, I don't think it got dispatched at all, I mean how can one parcel, addressed to me go to Glasgow but inside contained dog food and an invoice for some poor women in Coventry, then they said that one part of the pen is in Edinburgh and the other part still in Manchester???????? strange

Enjoy the puppies and thier wonderful mum. Would love to see more of proud mother and her babies!

I couldn't feed mine separately like that - they keep swapping dishes.  So best all in one huge dish.  I see you are on to the shredded paper now instead of newspapers.  It is cleaner but messier!

I do my own shredding so I know what's in it.  Don't want broken staples damaging their little paws or their tums as they eat everything!.
Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!
Post by: sandy on January 11, 2010, 11:09:50 am
Not keen on the shredded paper just yet, it hides the poos so you stand in them and the bit's of paper stick to your shoes or feet and get everywhere, at least sheets of paper you can see the little piles or not so little piles and now we have plenty of paper for now,,,,think we will keep to that although the pups are having fun making nests...I still think straw is best,  a lot of breader use it or wood chippings, I know you have to watch mites and dust but it is nice and insulating....not in the kitchen but when they are out in the dog room.....anyway, Islay did 2 big piles this morning so with her and the pups and the birds, I am poooed out for now...coffee time.

Sorry, but I disagree.  I've never used straw or wood chip for puppies, and never would, and I don't know any breeders who do.  Pups eat everything and I wouldn't want them choking or getting poorly tums, and as you say there are mites and dust which can cause lung problems.  I like shredded paper because any poos get covered in it so the pups stay clean.  But I don't walk in and out of my puppy pen as it's a different type from yours.  And I lift any poos I see anyway.  The only thing you have to watch is staples. They're lovely - doesn't look like nine though. And they seem to do everything in slow motion.

I've been swamped with work the past week... an IT client had a major system failure and was doing some "arty" networking at the weekend. Will be there tomorrow and should be a bit more active on the forums again fairly soon, although I don't have much time until Friday.

Depends how much she got. Garlic in small amounts won't do her any harm, and will protect a pup from infections - and fleas.  But too much might give her the runs

It was funny as her little nose was stuck under the radiator (not lituraly) and I wondered what she liked so much, then her breath smelt of Garlic...I wonder if she has developed a taste for the stuff!!

My dogs all get garlic every so often.  It's better in tablet form so they don't smell.

Title: Re: Pups are arriving!!!but going very soon, do they still need mum at night???

The pups are virtually weaned now but should I not let Islay into the pups tonight or should I leave it, they are 7 weeks old now, 8 weeks on Thursday.....not too sure as I do not want the pups to miss Isaly too much but on the other hand, want Isaly to stop feeding as 9 pups are taking all her food even though she gets so much extra!!!
P.S forgot to add, the pups are in the kitchen and Islay can only either be in or out of the kitchen!!

I would keep mum away from her babies as they are old enough, give her a chance to recover from feeding 9 pups.

Sandy, I think I did say before to take her away when they were weaned.  They don't need her if they are all eating well.

Did your pups make a row in the night annie?

No, never did.  They were in my bedroom for the first two weeks and I was up and down like a yo yo if any of them so much as breathed differently, then they all went through to the kitchen with Belle in with them to start with, and with the doors all open so I could hear them.  When they were fully weaned at 6 weeks they fed at 10pm and settled down for the night till 8 am next morning.

Morning, a lovely quiet night, I gave them some food around 10.00am but as Steve had to go to work we had to wake the pups up at 7.00 (he usually is up at 6.00 but the pups were sooooo quiet) I shall let them play out for a bit longer today as it appears milder, they have been going out everyday for a play and LOVE it, mini doggies. I took a bit of footage of Ben with them, he is so good Bless him, he took a bit of rag from one of the pups and was pretending to play tug of war, he was very gentle but he did get it in the end of course!!

You ARE joking????  Miss 9 smelly, pooey, noisy, destructive little *&^^&**s???
I never miss my puppies, they go one at a time usually, so you don't miss one, then when you are down to one or two they need so much more of your time nd attention that you are glad of the rest when they do go.

Miss them???   Never, the money is a very good sweetener, believe me! ::) ;) ;D ;D
