Title: Hello from Devon and Wales
Post by: Lord Summerisle on December 12, 2009, 09:45:05 am
Hi all, I live in Devon where I run a small crop protection/deer management/agricultural pest control business, and am also a partner in a new startup in Wales, making (at the moment) various sausages, but in the near future making salamis, bacon, air-dried ham, and developing energy-efficient, low cost equipment for small food producers to do the same.

In any time left over, I also make poultry sheds/coops/arcs, and other bits and bobs for agriculture, particularly fence stretching tools and fox-deterring poultry ladders. In the next couple of years, myself and Lady Summerisle plan to move to Wales for the next phase of the production/charcuterie business.

Welcome from Lincolnshire. I await your charcuterie business with anticipation. I hope you will be doing deliveries by post?

Hello,

Can I just ask about the wood you are using for your fencing and stuff.

Greetings,

Don

Hello,

Greetings,

Don

I don't do fencing, there are others better at that. I make fence-stretchers out of steel. The smaller poultry things I use 12mm ply as that's the most resistant to infestation by red mites - those ship-lap things you can buy look nice but they're reservoirs for the wretched things. As for the rest of it - whatever people want. Sterling board for cheapness, or tongue and groove for longevity - all depends on the punter's budget really.

For the sausages I use meat.

Hi,
Yes, I should have read more closely. That's clear now, thanks.
That's a good point though about the mites. I hate those things. I whitewash the inside of the chicken coop once a year or so with lime but still, I should clean it more frequently.

Greetings,
Don

Hello from me in a very frosty (but thankfully dry!) Lanarkshire  ;D
I'll be interested to hear more about your fox detering ladders - after trying (and failing) to get our population under control think my only option for chickens is to put the houses up on poles and try the ladders to see how they get on. Should be very interesting LOL!
Welcome to the forum  ;D

Tempting fate I am sure, but since having had pigs we have only ever lost one hen to a fox, she was wandering along the road when it came in daylight and grabbed her.  Must have been desperate.
