As a dispensing optician, I've got to comment ;)
Initially the proceedure was very complicated, and didn't have a huge successs rate, but in recent years since they've started using lasers it's come on in leaps and bounds. Very few people suffer complications and are back at work the following day, or day after. There's only one issue IMHO - if your prescription tends to increase year on year this will continue to happen after the surgery, so you may find yourself in the position, a few years down the line, when you need to get glasses again or have more surgery ? If your prescription's fairly stable and doesn't change much then you won't. Also, as far as I know, it has no effect on presbyopia (needing spex for reading in your mid-late 40's) as this is to do with the lens inside your eye, instead of the surface curve of your cornea (which is what the surgery corrects)
Hope that helps ?
Karen

I know 5 people that have had the procedure and all are delighted by the proccess and success. I even hear that Philip Schoffield had his eyes done on the This Morning programme last week and he too has pleased with the results. Good luck.

having worn glasses since I was 6 , thats 46 years now ....I am sick to death of specs. I did wear contacts years ago, but the whole routine drove me bonkers, not to mention the cost . I would have laser treatment in a flash (no pun intended but a good one anyway !!! ), but I just can't afford it . Maybe when they bring it down to £20 an eye and you go to a diy machine in the chemists.....er well maybe not !!!!
Good luck with it , don't take any notice of the stories about eyes getting burnt out , or the retina getting zapped by the laser . Don't listen to anybody that says it shrinks your eyes either !!! all should be fine . Funny how a guide dogs for the blind shop, is right next to a laser surgery place in town  ? , lots of people work in both places too .. always a big stream of people coming from the laser place the the gdfb !!!! :o :o ;D

I have only heard good things really , just wish I could get shot of my bottle bottoms, I am as blind as a bat without them !! Anyway good luck Blind Pew ....er SB

cheers

ha ha ha ha you read my mind - never a more surefire endorsement than if Rusty hasn't got pages of proclaimations of doom for anyone using the procedure

I hear Monsanto own the technology and they program the brain to only buy GM foods once you've had it done!!!

I've been paying a lot of attention to laser surgery options. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped my glasses or almost broken the stalks by holding them too tight when I take them off so I can take a photo ... but then there's the fear that if I'm unlucky enough to be one of those very few people who suffer problems, I'm absolutely humped  :-\

Back to reality, ::) I too would love to have my eyes sorted, I have a prescription pair and some off the counter readers placed near the computor and it is so annoying having to put them on and off all the time to see things, as they are vari focals I sometimes find they "narrrow" my vision if worn walking around, can make me a bit dizzy too.. not sure if it works for very long on age related sight problems? I worked with a lady who nearly lost her sight from an infection from contact lenses, so there is always that chance as with any surgery, not so nice when it affects you though!!  :o

i had mine done about 10yrs ago give or take, best thing i've ever done, little bit of dry eyes for the first year or so first thing in the morning and first month or so halo's arround lights, couple of girls at work had the more up to date procedure and didnt have dry eyes etc and minimal pain. they were doing an interest free payment scheme when i got mine, paid it up over a couple of years, no probs.
best of luck

Mandy ;D

Dose it really last that long then? I hate walking in my vari focals as they make me a bit dizzy sometimes and then I have to keep putting my glasses on and off to focus on things in shops.......I may save up along with saving to visit my daughter in Australia! ummmmmmm!!!

if you are short sighted - like me

then it should last all your days!!! (if you ahve a stable prescription, some peoples eyes get worse over time, so if you ahve to keep getting a new prescription, it's probably not going to be much help)

ALso, as you grow older the muscle in your eye weakens - hence why people need to get "readers" to read things close up

I would need to get prescription readers if i didn't have surgery - as anything with a minus prescription must come from an optometerist.

However, after surgery, if i need readers i can pick up the ones form a chemist as they are all magnifiers (a + prescription) and can be bought over the counter

my prescription has been stable for years now, but that doesn't mean i won't need readers in a few years. just means i'll only need one pair of glasses rather than changing pairs constantly.

presbyopia (needing spex for reading in your mid-late 40's)

Is 'presbyopia' the Greek for 'being shagged out and getting old, and starting to fall to bits'? Because that's what I've put it down to up to now.

Post by: sandy on December 12, 2009, 10:54:26 am
Blimey.....Royalty!!!! I'm sure that presbyopia' is natures answer to us not being able to see what we are looking like, what we are eating and where we are going, in other words, if non of us had glasses we would all have much shorter life's, senility and loss of hearing and movement also contribute

Presbyopia - it's the lens inside your eye that's affected. All through your life the lens grows new cells, when you're young the lens can alter it's shape easily to focus on near and far things, but as you get more and more cells the lens gets 'full up' of cells and can't flex so easily, hence you start to lose near focus. That's the simplest explaination I can give you I'm afraid, hope it makes sense  ;) ;D ;D ;D
The line about the muscles causing it is frequently used by optical assistants who don't really have much of a clue  :P Sorry  ;)
But yeah, 'presbys' does come from the greek for old man or elder  ;D
I'm alright  ;D I won't need reading spex for a LONG time - I'm so short sighted that I doubt the magnification needed for reading will ever exceed my prescription - unless I live to about 120 ! ::)

If it does - the new business will be launched in January, polytunnels will be built, chickens will be adopted and i'll build a proper shelter for my outdoor hottub!!!

If it doesn't - anyone want to work a large area of garden, walk my dog and provide legal counsel for me whilst i try to sue the ass off Optical Express?????

SEE you all tomorrow (hopefully)

Thanks Russ, but wasn't needed, i can see fine!!!

was very straightfoward, no pain for the procedure, joking away with the surgeon during the op

had a couple of hours of very watery eyes/blurred vision after - but a couple of hours in bed sorted that out and i'm close to 100% now

Congratulations!

I fancied having mine done but the opticial put me off. Maybe I'm going to the wrong optician! How much does it cost (hope that's not too cheeky)?

it varies on the presciption, but basically, for every .25 adjustment it'll cost about £70-130 per eye

the variation will depend on weather you go for the cheapest conventional lasik/Lasek, or wavefront lasik - or if you want a mechanicl flap cut or a laser flap cut
