Title: Blackberries
Post by: laurelrus on September 04, 2014, 07:38:45 am
Hi,
This is almost certainly a silly question - we moved here in March, town to country, so everything is new to us. We have a load of berries growing in the garden that look like blackberries, and are looking ready for picking. If they look like blackberries, is it safe to assume that's what they are and eat them? Or is there anything that looks like blackberries that isn't edible??
Before we eat them and bake with them, I just want to be sure!

If it's a bramble and they look like blackberries and taste like blackberries then they're blackberries... If we never hear from you again they weren't.... :roflanim:

You could post a pic in the 'identification' section - or here, just to be absolutely sure it's not deadly nightshade  :tired:  It depends on how well you know blackberries.

Thanks! I'll go take a photo and put it on here.
Don't want to get wiped out by poisonous berries on a Thursday, when I've almost made it to the weekend

Compare to some blackberries in your local supermarket......lot cheaper from your own garden though & tastier

I was looking in my garden just now and was struck by how similar to blackberries honeysuckle berries are.  Different leaves and vines of course but could easily catch someone out.  I've no idea if honeysuckle berries are edible

Honeysuckle is poisonous in anything but small quantities if I remember rightly.
