Title: Sheepdog (potential worker) currently in foster needs a home
Post by: Old Shep on September 03, 2014, 12:11:59 pm
Cassie is 3 yrs old and a "failed" sheepdog from Cumbria.  I am fostering her at the moment (Yorkshire/Lancs border), and think she still has potential for a smallholding or similar.  Probably not keen enough for a commercial flock, but could be useful for occasional work, and would make a very loving loyal pet as well.  She could live in or out, and gets on with other dogs and loves people. Not cat tested, should be ok with chooks with a bit more training.  I have done absolutely no training on sheep with her at all, and she can be walked through the middle of them just ignoring them.  However she saw Dottie working (the black and white dog in the video) and just helped!  She needs to be trained to lie down at a distance, but she is a joy to train ( I have done some early agility training with her).  If anyone is interested please PM me for more details. (There will be an adoption fee to Protecting Preloved Border Collies Rescue.)

For those not on facebook, here is a video.  Cassie is the little dark dog (not the black and white one - she isn't going anywhere :-) )

I've e:mailed my mother-in-law who is currently dogless and has a handful of sheep. Last I heard she was thinking of getting a new dog and Cassie sounds perfect for them but she's always had beardies before so no idea what she'll think....

yes that's my suspicion too Funkyfish!  Her vets records just say border collie, but the eyes and build look a bit kelpie :-)

She looks lovely and nice and steady. Ideal for smallholder. Not sure my sheep would work with a dog now as bucket trained (sort of) and used to dogs being around. Foo bar was thinking about a dog?

I keep looking at her and thinking how useful  she would be here instead of me running around like a nutter

I'd say a lot of Kelpie in her - and she's pretty good at that job isn't she!  I'm most impressed.  Is that a Gordon Setter bringing up the rear and wondering what it's all about  :roflanim:

After the evening I've had trying to catch up the ewes with one nutter in there I'm seriously tempted.  My knees won't let me run and the damned thing knows it! Got it in the end but spent the evening with a ice pack! Wonder if she'd like my spaniels?!

she's really good with other dogs - and respects my old grumpy Lucy.  She needs to be fed separately (or supervised), but apart from that can live 24/7 with other dogs.

She looks lovely!!  I always had sheepdogs until meeting my husband, who had GSD.  Just lost his old dog after 14 years ....we said we would not have another dog ....but ....so miss having one to walk and take to the farm with me.....

Oh, on Saturday, I am at the Fell Race which is ....er .....yes, well, Lancs/Yorkshire area :roflanim: Opposite direction from any dog needing a home.  I did broach the subject this morning with my OH ......as he went out the door to work.  Did not get a reply.  Where are you, Old Shep - not an exact location, just as a guide to distance -you can PM me if you prefer.
