Title: mobile phones - small holding friendly?
Post by: hafod on July 28, 2014, 12:55:17 pm
it's almost time to upgrade my phone and I have no idea what to go for, so am looking for suggestions for something small holding friendly. (surely that must exist)

My current phone is a nokia (it has buttons ;D ) it does also  have a touch screen and some apps but I'm increasingly finding I need something with a few more functions. So I guess I am finally ready to take the plunge into the world of smart phones.

My wish list is:

run on an android operating system (necessary for some of the apps that i want to use).

not break if I drop it on the yard ( I will buy a shock proof cover for it anyway but  I have seen so many phones with broken screens from little knocks - nothing like what the old nokia has withstood)

be small. I ride and need the phone to fit in jodhpur pockets which tend to be on the small size. My current phone is about 12cm x 5cm and that fits fine. (I have tried mobile phone holders that fit to arms, legs, round the neck and onto the saddle but I still think the best place is in my pocket - less likely to lose it that way!)

Preferably available as a free upgrade. I have been with O2 for years so I do get a good selection of free phones.

have a decent battery life - I don't talk much on my phone but do use it to check emails and send texts. Some smart phones seem to need charging everyday.

Play music/radio

What do you suggest? are there any phones I should definitely avoid?

Thanks in advance

The original is still the best in my opinion.......i-phone but your requirement for the android operating system doesn't make this an option.
Good luck anyway

I have a Motorola Defy+.  Robust, waterproof ish, light, small.  You can't get them any more though.  Not seen any newer phone that even compares with it's "outdoors" qualities, otherwise I would have upgraded.

There was a website I was looking at recently that specialised in mobiles for farmers, but I can't find it now.  This site might be of help: http://www.tuffphones.co.uk/. (http://www.tuffphones.co.uk/.)  the tougher the phone though the bigger/heavier it will become, alas.

..also ... I love my smart phone but it does really annoy me when I have wet hands or its raining !!  Then I just wish that I had old fashioned buttons again :)

I just bought a nokia lumia off ebay. I would recommend a samsung galaxy ace, they're very reliable, am still trying to get used to my new phone
