I love the pair of collared doves which lurk around our smallholding. There were three but the sparrow hawk caught one earlier in the year - I would have thought they were too close to its own size for a sparrow hawk, but that's what got it.
They come to our feeders in the flower garden and sing us soothing songs. Then the other day we saw a sad pile of dove feathers near a feeder and assumed the sparrow hawk had struck again. There were still two flying around so we thought how easily consoled the survivor was to have another mate already. Then Mr F noticed than one of them had only a couple of tail feathers so we realised the sparrow hawk had missed, and was left with a beakful of feathers and no dinner for her chick ;D
I really like having the sparrow hawk around, but I wish it would leave my doos alone. There are plenty of sparrows now for quick snacks.
A happy story for once
