Although I do not need an allotment myself, I know the council provide some near the local park, which are very popular. My friend is in our local gardening club, and I have had a look at their on line newsletter. Friend does not get involved with the trips out, but she does visit their "shop". I say shop, when really its a shed on the allotments, opening from Spring onwards on Saturdays. They have seeds, compost, garden essentials etc. at competitive prices, and have plant swaps etc.
Looking at the trips out they have (although mainly in the week, so no use for us who work) they go to garden centres, open gardens, and general interesting places for gardeners. Also as a member, they have sorted out discounts with local garden centres, which is a good idea.
To be a member, and get newsletters, and these discounts, is only £4 per year, which is good value.
I think I may join in the New Year.
Just thought perhaps you all may have a similar gardening club in your area that you could take a look at and see if its of use to you.

We're members of the local Horticultural Society. It organises a local show in September, fundraises (bingo teas and the like) for the show and has a few guest speakers. We've never been as they tend to be on chrysathemums, or bonsai, neither of which interest us. We're sleeping members.
However, they do have a good new Committee so I'll tell the Secratary about your club. Do you have contact details in case our lot want to find out more?
