And completely my fault. We hit some high temperatures today and it did cross my mind that I should probably try and move the house the broody was in to somewhere more shady.....but never got around to it. Checked on her mid-afternoon to find her lying dead off the eggs - complete heat exhaustion. It does show her dedication that she hadn't just got up and left them - she had water and cooler places elsewhere in the run if she'd put her own survival over the eggs. I've whizzed the eggs into an incubator but no idea how long they'd been left - although clearly not chilled. So watch out for your broodies in this weather - learn from my mistake :(

A timely reminder as I'm sure quite a few people have broodies at this tone of year - I have one!
You made me think about looking at the shade she gets - she nesting in the coop.

Awwww - sorry to hear that Hester. It has been a hot one today. This winter I am going to make living willow "igloos" in all the runs as our middle field is absolutely devoid of any shade!

I have a little plantation here which I am adding to year on year. So far we have got about 300 trees both basket weaving and structural varieties. :) I pollard them at hip height - saves me having to bend down!!

How awful! (the broody, not the willow!). The 'heat wave' has not bothered with North Yorkshire yet, but I'm going to reassess my broody coop!
