Title: cockerels

We ate out first bird from a batch we hatched back in March. He was very tasty. In the past we left them to free range and always found their meat to be rather tough so this time I tried a new way. I have two large runs, the kind you would use for rabbits. I put them in the hay barn as it is empty over the summer. We hatched 14 chicks altogether and they have been living in these runs. I move them every 2nd day, clean up and give them fresh shavings. I also pick chickweed and grass so they have something to do rather than just sit around. Although not as big as the fast growing meat birds ( ours are Sussex cross ) I am still pleased with the results so far. Not a cheap way to rear chicken by any means but at least I know what they have been fed.
