Title: What a night!
Post by: doganjo on November 03, 2009, 12:05:39 am
I have just returned from my vet, £150 lighter in the pocket, but the richer for the experience and the 5 babies we saved.  I noticed a black discharge from Belle's vulva and phoned our emergency vet immediately.  I knew from my previous research that meant a dead puppy or a ruptured placenta.  So off we trundled the half hour to the main surgery, never having been there before, and a satnav that didn't like the code I put in, so knowing what village I was heading for I keyed that in then just nosed around in the dark till i found lights on what looked a likely building.  Belle was examined then put under and we got started.  Option was oxytocin and let her whelp them two days early, but Michelle reckoned we had a better chance of saving the pups if we did a Caesar.  So it was all systems go.  Five pups down one horn - only one mummified pup in the other. So the trainee vet, Iain, and I set to rubbing them as they came out and putting them in the intensive care incubator as soon as they started to breath, while Michelle stitched Belle back up an tried to wake her.  She was in a nice deep sleep and wouldn't budge till I shouted 'Birdies' in her ear.  Then she started to take notice.  It's a crucial time next few days but all pups have had their first drink and are settled.

I'm exhausted!   Salmon steak doesn't taste so good reheated ::)

well done Annie,
very worrying when something like that happens . Really hope Belle is ok , and that all the pups pull through too... I should think it will be hard work keeping the pups away from her stitches too now ?
When Ghillie (sadly gone now) had her pups , I was awake every five minutes checking all was ok the first couple of nights. Now they (3 boys, Al , Arnie and Steve) are 7 years old , and still just as lovely . Each of them has a little of Ghillie's ways in them .
Still best of luck with them all mate ....have a cuppa and relax.... ::)

cheers

Russ

I agree with Sandy, if it hadn't been for your quick actions and the fact that you know what you're doing it could've been a very different outcome.
Congratulations, hope you're going to post a photo soon  ;)
I love puppies  ;D

Well Done Annie - So pleased that the pups survived and all has gone well in the end.

I know you won't rest for checking the mammy and babies but very well done -
I hope the Vet gave you discount for knowing what to do and getting stuck in too ;D

Love from all of us xxx - pictures please  ;D ;D

Yes, I misread the one for a three in my stupor of rubbing pups to get them to breath  ;D ;D ;D  Still worth it - less than the price of one puppy.
All nice and quite now, feeding well, and Belle is improving all the time too - eating and drinking although still being a little picky!

Well done both of you.  Hope they all come on strong!  What vet did you end up at Annie?  Our local 'pet' vet uses the vet college service for out of hours so its a trip to Edinburgh or Glasgow in a hurry.

Our local vet is Cameron & Greig at Tillycoultry and Milnathort.  I'd to go to Milnathort to meet Michelle at the surgery.

The "white/sandy brown ones" are an orange and white dog and an orange and white bitch - both are natural bobtails and were spoken for before they were born. There are two tailed black and white digs and a bobtail one too.  The tailed dogs are both spoken for too.

Well done on taking action so quickly.  Pleased the pups were saved.  I think we are happy to pay for our animals vet fees, its just something that goes with keeping them, isn't it?

The pups look absolutely gorgeous!

Brittanys are quite a specialist breed.  They are basically a hunting machine (Hunter, Pointer, Retrievers) and obedience must be instilled before they are allowed off leash for the first time.  The ones we get coming on our rescue list are often lost unable to find their way home that have taken off after rabbits, birds etc and their owner has no recall control in place.  We are not allowed to trace the owner from the microchip.  Only the microchip companies can do that.  Nor are we given the breeders name, but because the population is relatively small we can often find out who they are.  Many breeders are willing to help re-home one of their dogs, but not all. My pups go to knowledgeable and pre-vetted homes, and will be tattooed at 6 weeks. There is a clause in my bill of sale which states that the dog must come back to me if the owner cannot keep it for any reason.  It isn't legally enforceable but it does make people think.

She's a sweet little girl and doesn't mind people seeing her babies.  Not many bitches are so easy going.  It was very kind of you to bring a pressie for me - I shall enjoy using it, thank you.

So what happens if they're chipped? does whoever scans (vet?) have to contact the microchip company, and rely on them to contact owners?  always thought chips were a brilliant idea - (though no luck in tracing our missing cat!) but is that thier downfall then?

Good idea about the 'return' clause, the rescue centre Sheba was from said the same.
How many Brittanys are there in Britain then?  Are they 'rare' or just special?!

Brittanys came into the UK in 1982, I had a dog from the first litter the following year. We had 4 when my first husband, Sandy, was alive; and 8 at one time when John, my second husband, was alive, and I now have three - possibly increasing to four  ;).  There are now about 3500 in the country but not all registered with the KC.  A lot of them are owned as falconers or roughshooters dogs and they don't all bother registering litters.  About 150 are being shown and about 15 being field trialled.  Many others are worked to the gun. And YES, they are special!

If a dog is found by the RSPCA or dog warden and scanned, they inform the microchip company only!  It is then left to the company to find out if the owner wants the dog back or not.  They NEVER contact US - the breed club - or the breeder.  We are often told by the general public that 'there is a Brittany in such and such dogs home'. I find that totally wrong and have said so but it doesn't seem to change their minds. Sometimes a dog gets loose because the owner has not been informed properly as to how to train it - there are a great many people breeding Brittanys without giving proper after sales service. The Club has members who are experienced trainers and can help owners so that they could perhaps have their dog back. We have one such dog at the moment, supposedly a runaway, destructive, aggressive to other dogs, suffers separation anxiety.  He has been with one of our Committee members for about a week and is running free with his own three dogs - 2 bitches and a  dog -  with few problems.  He has been introduced to numerous other dogs with no problem, is no longer destructive and with a bit of luck his owner will be retrained too so she can have him back.  If anyone wants to know moer look here - www.brittanyclub.co.uk

Congratulations on the pups. They look lovely.
Your nerves must have been shredded. I was in a worse state when my Stubs had a c section than when I did.
Brittanys look like very special dogs
