Hi
I have been wondering whether an entire male goat and an entire male pig all have that smell when you send them to slaughter. The reason why I am asking this question is out of curiosity. If you leave a billy entire and a boar entire, if they're near females does the smell then permeate the meat? Also does it affect the taste of the meat? :dunce:

We've had entire boars slaughtered without any taint - but to be fair, they were young and in a batchelor group.
There's been threads on this before and the general opinion on boars was that so long as they were away from females for a period before slaughter, they were fine.
Can't say anything about billys as I have no experience but we sent our tup away in March time and he was fine. He hadn't been near any ewes since the December.

Boar taint is subjective - not everyone can smell it and certainly there isn't usually a taste.
There's a difference between a young boar who's had a smell of females and an older 'working' boar - I wouldn't consider eating an ex-breeding boar but they are used for salami and highly flavoured sausages I believe.
Have a trawl back through the pig section for threads on boar taint........there are plenty with all sorts of useful answers and opinions ;D
Pass on the Billy question - I have no idea ???

There is nothing more pervasive than a billygoat smell. not too bad during the summer , but come Autumn and they stink. best to castrate for eating.

we had pork curry in jimmy chungs which absolutely reeked of boar taint :eyelashes: :eyelashes: it was inedible.
i dont know about the billies as the smell is urine isnt it? but i would presume an older entire would hold onto an odour. my billies dont smell much as they arent breeding atm. mind you the smell stays on your hands whatever the season.

The smell on a billy does linger. My girl was only with one for fifteen minutes and she stunk for a week afterwards. I've not tried eating an entire male though but I have been told there is a taint.
