Title: Help
Post by: Karen and Andy on June 15, 2014, 12:19:36 pm
Hello you lovely people.  :excited:

We bought 6 acres in Wales (Carmarthenshire)  last year and now need to cut and bale the grass - I never imagined there would be so many tractors, toppers etc to choose from! What do you guys recomend? Is there anywhere in Wales you can buy a small tractor etc?

Karen

Hi, might be better to look for a local contractor to do it this year rather than either rush in and buy first available machinery or let it go past its best.  Salesmen will see you coming with pound signs in their eyes. Ask at local ag store for someone who may help you out this season and take your time researching what you want to buy before parting with hard earned cash! Or local Facebook pages may provide contacts.. Good luck.

You may also get more advice if you post this topic in the machinery section as members don't always check the market place.  :sunshine:
Sorry I cannot help with your query as I have not a clue myself   ???

Try to get a contractor to do it, The set up costs to do 6 acres with machinery will be very high.

Definitely do not rush in to buy equipment.  I lost a lot of money making this mistake when we bought our land, all my own fault and the seller saw me coming ::) ::) .

Ask around and get a local guy to cut it for you.  Do you want/need hay, haylage or silage?  Wrapped or unwrapped?  Have you somewhere under cover to store it - stacks are ok but you may lose a lot to bad weather.

Congrats on buying your land    What are you going to do with it now?

Ditto what Bramblecot says ;)

We're having a Carmarthen get together on 29 June (details in the events section of the forum), you're welcome to come along and pick peoples brains.
