Title: Branching out
Post by: bricktop on April 13, 2008, 11:15:20 pm
Came across the TAS by accident, no suprise there then. Have a holding on the south coast and have just taken delivery of 3 Tamworth x GOS weaners. First venture into pigs for the pot, after ducks & hens. Interested to hear from anyone who might comment on skin condition and treatment. The smallest is showing signs of excessive wear to hind quarters. I can see they love to scratch but fear that something else might be lurking.

Has anyone used a mite powder treatment before and if so can you advise me of the name?

I would also like to bring on some turkeys this year and would be interested to hear from you if you have any spare for sale. I can collect within 10 miles of Emsworth, Hants.

Thanks

Hello and welcome.   And congrats on your first porkers - its a wonderful experience rearing them and producing that succulent joint at the end of it all.  :pig:   Ref skin - do you know if they were wormed before you got them?  Also, buy a can of PIG OIL - any good country store (something like SCATS) will sell it - and give them a bit of a wipe over with this.  It appears to be very soothing for them and workers wonders.

Hi welcome, look for small flattish black dots on the skin, especially behind the ears and in the folds of skin between the legs.  These are fleas.  Ivamectin will dose against internal and external parasites for 6 months.  HM

Thanks for the tips, pig oil and Ivamecatin obtained and dispensed. Pigs seemed much more at ease once they had been oiled, they did protest a fair bit but then seemed very chilled.

No real sign of any nasties but the jab should deal with any.

Thanks again.

Pig update. One week on and they seem fine, I wish I could sleep as much. Building a new pen which means they will also be able to take some sun and have a good root around. So far all food scraps (excluding meat) have found there way into the pen, this includes bannana with custard, grapes. They love carrots and have filled up on parsnip tonight.

They seem healthy enough, more pig oil due this weekend.

Our 4 year old daughter is now a dab hand at telling people that they are not pets and that we will be eating them in 6 months time, hasnt learnt tact yet!

More later.
