Hi does anyone know what kind of pig this is ? he is 11 weeks old I asked the breeder & some of our neighbours they say he is normal the only kind of pig,
-
He looks like the ones they breed in the elevages here; is he a large white? ( :-[ showing my ignorance)
-
Definately looks like a large white to me. These are usually the ones reared on a large scale, indoors by commercial farmers and what you find on the shelves in Tesco.
Are you rearing him for meat or as a 'pet' ? He'll get pretty big and very smelly by 6-8 months old.
Do you have any other pigs for him to be with ? He should have the company of his own kind and will get lonely, depressed and possibly destructive if on his own.
Where are you keeping him and how much space have you got ?
I'd be very wary of any breeder who doesn't give you (or know) the name of the breed.
Sorry for the spanish inquisition but it sounds like this may be your first experience with pigs - they're not as easy to keep as you'd expect. I just want to make sure you know the basics, please forgive me if you know all this already.

I would agree, most likely a Large White - with maybe a touch of something else (landrace or welsh ?) if he's from a commercial herd. He does look like my Large white's (or Yorkshire pigs as some call them).
A couple of my LW weaners

Thank you ;D Lil & Vi are a bit bigger now, but just as cute & cheeky :pig: They have a habit of opening their gate (by scratching on it) and going for a jolly in the rams field - they are always back in time for tea though ::) ;) :pig:

Oh I think every animal knows when there is food on the go...

Thanks for your replys, he is living in the stable for now until we build him a sty as he cant stay in the stable because we have an old rescue horse coming in december when her foal is weined, he has 1000m2 of secure garden to play in & a pig next door to talk to through the fence, he is for meat & should be ready by march, we are in Bulgaria & there are a lot of pigs all the same as him ,I dont think they have breeds here ,I had 2 chinese pot bellied pigs years ago but not a lot of experiance with pigs, most of our local ones never come out of their stys at all & are killed & butchered at home, we have a paddock at the back off the garden that needs a fence on 1 side & a small plum orchard that also needs fencing which we will keep him in when its done, he is very friendly but much bigger than my others were at his age
-
Large whites are big pigs, some of the sows can be a good 400kgs ! You will have a lot of pork ;D
-
Is he neutered? If so much easier. If you have pigs again, even though there is a pig next door, it is far kinder to have 2, they are very sociable, like to snuggle up together in the arc.
Sorry to bring this up but when the inevitable happens are you taking him to the local abbatoir or are you having him done at home? If he is being done at home, please make sure it is done humanely. Otherwise you will suffer nightmares, have tough meat and never want to go through the experience again.

Hi thanks for your replys, he isnt neutered yet but may be soon, some people say he dosnt need to be if he is going to be killed at 6 monthes old, there dosnt seem to be any abbatoirs everyone else kills them at home or in the the village centre I want him killed as nicely as possible & am looking into methods of doing it, next time we are getting 2 but he was the last 1 at the market they arent often for sale localy .most people here only have 1 & they are normaly killed at christmas not by humane methods, he will not be big enough this christmas probobly ready in march ,
