Title: Hi from Caithness
Post by: confusedwhippet on April 11, 2008, 11:46:33 pm
Quick hello from me in rainy Caithness.

Have a 25 acre croft on which we are keeping rare breed sheep and poultry that are native to the Highlands and Islands along with growing all our own food.

Have read hundreds of books as new to this so apologies now for all the questions.

Hi, there

Welcome to the TAS forums - hope you enjoy them and find them useful.

What kind of breeds do you have / intend to have? I noticed in The SCottish Farmer yesterday that two Scots Dumpy pullets sold to something like £350 (yes, three hundred and fifty quid) - was that you?

We love rare breeds - for us pigs  :pig: - there is something wonderful knowing that a breed history goes back so far and it is so interesting to learn about they way they have evolved.

Really looking forward to hearing from you again.

We currently have Boreray, Castlemilk Moorit, Manx and Hebrideans arriving soon in the sheep department.

Looking for both Scots dumpy and greys at the moment but at £350 we probably can afford half of one.

Really sad to hear the rare breeds centre in Aberdeen is closing so we will be the only ones in the area trying to save livestock native to the Highlands and Islands

Is Doonies Farm actually closing? I thought a rescue package had been put together...

I'm not really sure. I have contacted them to see if we can re-home any animals as I understood from someone that due to the closure all the animals were being sold off but I haven't heard anything from them.
