Makes you wonder why people breed puppies with no homes lined up...

We're planning a litter for this summer and already have half a dozen homes confirmed plus we are keeping one ourselves :)

Aye and if it was such a 'marvellous working strain'. . . . . would they be trying to punt pups at the market?

Having said that, I know some folk who really do keep themselves to themselves, and so lining up lots of homes for the pups is hard . . . . or impossible. Especially decent homes.

So should they really be breeding pups?

Depends how you look at it.

If they have a pair of very good dogs, from a very good line . . . . . and want to keep the line going, and take a pup from them, they need to do two things.

Sell the surplus, or cull them.

Both have their own obvious issues!

I've never bred a litter, where all the pups and more have not been spoken for.

But can imagine, a situation where I had six or so homes and the bitch did something daft like drop 12  pups. . . .

I'd end up having to sell a couple. .  . . . but i certainly wouldn't chuck them up for auction at the local mart!

working sheep dogs being sold at a sheep auction isnt a daft idea really. you can kinda of imagine they will go to country homes.
beats australia where sheepdog puppies were given away free from a cardboard box at a carboot sale.

Yes I suppose that's very true . . . . and to be fair, a room full of sheep farmers may well be a very good place to find a decent home for a collie pup.

I think the same person sold 2 of the litter at last Saturdays market making £120 and £170 and I guess that they were testing the market and now bringing the remainder to sell.  Either that or someone saw the 2 sold and then thought they would sell their litter the same way.

Sedgemoor do sometimes get some more unusual sales with last year a pair of emus being sold!

I was working at the NSA (National Sheep Association) show in Devon last year where a whole load of sheepdogs were sold- with space to see them work beforehand. seems the ideal place to sell them, where working shepherds are most likely to be.
