Title: How do I find a good slaughterhouse?
Post by: funkyfish on May 08, 2014, 05:21:08 pm
I have three whethers that need sending off soon. There are a couple of slaughter houses near me that also cut etc. Have no idea what to look for or what to ask? We don't even really eat lamb/hogget so have no Idea about what cuts to ask for.

A friend will be taking them in a Pony trailer so need to arrange around them really, I assume that they probably do cows/sheep/pigs on different days?

Can anyone help re how this works? I would phone, but I kind of go to pieces on the phone (have a weird phone thing going on- am working on it) and end up sounding like a 4 year old child, and as not a bloke I often feel even more useless when asking about these sorts of things, if you know what I mean..

Where in Devon are you? Snell's at south chard are ideal.

We always use Snells  .  Really helpful, lovely people and kind to the animals.

We are just North of Honiton, It wouldn't be too far away then. I was looking at Easthill Pride, Ottery?

Never dealt with them but Stillman's in taunton is not too far. I've never had any issues especially if you get them there early on a Monday morning.

I have heard that they are very good too - but to far away for us.
Snells do sheep on Tuesdays, collection about 1 week later.  We usually ask for their butcher's cuts, bagged for freezing.  You can either have the offal or not.  The office staff will explain.  They also do a 'farmers' bag where it is all jointed but in one bag, it's a few pounds cheaper.

Thank you everyone! Much happier in organising it to be done now! ;D

Don't even like sheep meat, but determined to have some, as one of the boys is a complete pain in the back side and I am determined he will be good for something! :P

just as a matter of interest, what do they charge for slaughter and butchering and supplying in butcher bags?

Kill and dress is £27 per lamb plus £2 for mincing. All joints are bagged (not vacuum-packed) and labelled.  We have always been asked to take the sheep in on Tuesdays - give the office a ring, they are very helpful.

Wow, that's twice what we pay! Although still cheap compared to many prices I've seen

What area (roughly) are you smee?  As with everything it is location, location, location ;) .  Wages are rubbish around here but the prices don't seem to be any lower ::)

Lucky you!  What a perfect set-up.  Are you able to sell the meat like that or is it just for home consumption?

We pay £15 kill and cut.... But it is basic (legs shoulders and chops)loose bags, no labels and he won't do mincing....  Good luck, first time daunting, but you are doing a good thing seeing through to the end yourself

I wish we could have the lambs killed at home. The worst part is having to subject them to an hour in the trailer and then arriving at somewhere so noisy and smelling so wrong
I'm near Shrewsbury - the abattoir we use is in Rhosllanerchrugog
