Title: Anyone want to go halves on a 50ml bottle of Heptavac P?
Post by: smee2012 on May 06, 2014, 09:51:40 pm
I'm just outside Shrewsbury and will be vaccinating my 6 lambs this week - I bought the Heptavac this morning and it's in my fridge waiting. Having already had to waste almost an entire bottle of it last month to vaccinate my four ewes for their booster, I'd rather not let another one go to waste and it would be good to share the cost, especially as I'll need yet another bottle in 6-8 weeks time!

Anyone going to be vaccinating lambs or doing ewe boosters very soon?

Why throw it away, I speak to vets and pharmaceutical companies all the time and they say it won't have any bad effect,

I use all medicines on the farm well past there supposed opening imes, and never have detrimental effects.

Hep p is a live vacine and only has a 10 hour life once opened. Smee you are right not to use it again.

Fo the record:

It's a mix of toxoids and formalin inactivated material in thiomersal preservative.

Not a live vaccine.

Even though I'm non-practising I am still registerd as a vet so I cannot make any comments as to it's keeping properties in the fridge. Contamination is the greatest issue (as in draw all with minimal bottle sticks )

It's also a POM-VPS so strictly speaking spitting a bottle between users should have been apporved by the vet/pharmacist or SQP who supplied

Hi, just got the 2 lambs which need vaccinating, so would happily go halves with you. I just need to check with previous keepers that they haven't already done it but I don't think they have. I'm just outside shrewsbury too so sure we can coordinate  :sheep:

That would be great  If this will be your lambs' first lot of jabs, I'm assuming you'd like to share a bottle for the second dose too?

It's such a pain when animal meds only come in relatively large quantities. I'm sure there's a business opportunity there for someone!

Oh yeah that would be great if you don't mind? These are our first sheep so I'm hoping you might be able to give me some tips on how to give it?! Under that inch of wool they just seem to be scrawny mites! Are you in any major hurry to give it as won't be free until weekend at the earliest?

No, I can wait until the weekend. If you drop me a private message to let me know where you are and we can arrange to meet. I can certainly show you how to do it. Do you have needles etc? I've got a gun and can provide you with a new needle if you don't have one?
