Here here!   There are too many careless breeders in the UK too!  I think that all dog breeder should be licensed and then they could be inspected. this of course wouldn't stop them selling to bad owners, but would in my opinion be a step in the right direction. i think the same should apply to cats and horses. I don't disagree with the article, but I do disagree with the idea of licensing.

Licensing is the states permission to undertake an action and my freedoms are being impinged too much as it is.

I DO agree though, for the welfare of animals conditions under which animals can be transferred and raised.  That is legislation not licensing.  Governments are lazy and weak.  They would rather restrict the right in the first place than control in any meaningful sense the conditions under which something is carried out.  But fundamentally, I am a free person and any restriction on my right to act as such should be enthrined in legislation and not in secondary licensing.  You wouldn't be able to pass all the restrictions through parliament than have slipped under the radar in the last 20 years.

Idealogically I agree with you completely KC.  Whether we can afford the luxury of a properly run democracy now we don't create any wealth however... ???

When the article refers to breeders it includes breeders of mongrels and crossbreeds.  They ALL add to the over population of dogs not just in the UK, but right across the world.

Licensing is legislation and it's the only way to control breeding.  Money talks and if people can breed a bitch and make money out of it they will - whatever the breeding behind it.  They won't stop that voluntarily so legislation is definitely required.  I understand about freedom of choice but these dogs that are born, are passed from pillar to post, then killed for no other reason than they can't be found a home, have no choice either.

I never bred from any of my girls, though Iwould have dearly loved to have had puppies from them I worried that I would be able to find good homes for all of the spare puppies.

I feltl guilty about not rehomeing unwanted dogs, but the one time I did rather than buy another Dane I managed to get the one which had been returned to the home twice already after being abandoned the first time, and it took me the rest of his nearly fif

teen years to get him properly trained, and even in his last days he was capable of giving me hassle  :eyelashes:

Having said that authorities only normally seem to stop the law abiding citizens from doing anything and choose to come down hard on those, whilst letting those who flout the rules continue to do so as its too much effort to bother to stop them
