Title: Running Costs
Post by: Mickey on April 28, 2014, 05:00:31 pm
Hi,
Hopefully not a daft question.  Can anyone suggest likely running costs per month or year for the following? -

2 x Pigs
5 x Sheep

I'm thinking about average feed costs, vet bills and whatever else I need to factor in to our plans.
Thanks,
Mickey

I recently did some sums and worked out it costs us £17 to get a sheep through a year, but that is with the advantage of being able to produce our own fodder and buying things like drenches in large quantities.

Do you already have all the kit
Ark, fencing
Hurdles, shears

As J&H say what breeds, which bits will you grow which will you buy ?
Are lambs to be in or outdoor
Are pigs in or outdoor

Just to say I haven't got a clue as to costs

Go to the pigs section of forum and theres a pig cost calculator which may be of interest.
I can't possibly put on a public forum how much my pigs cost as it may be used against me in divorce proceedings :innocent: should OH actually find out how much they cost!
mandy :pig:

Mickey prices are low if you took you re live stock trailer to thainstone on Saturday you would pay £50 to 60 for good hoglets and the price of a pig would be £40 .So fix you re freezer up first and then get some prices. I went to England last week Melton mowbrey all farmers deal with stock not meney are full time farmers ....18 1b Turkey £ 10 oven redey i bort a full back of pork chops 20 pound .Prices like that you Carnot compete  .Sell lamb and pork but deal for it and not keep it .Prices blown me away .

Cheers everyone,
Sorry for lateness in replying, we have just been up to Scotland looking at property.  Travelled up past Inverness, then across to Keith and then down to Annan area where we stayed with a friend.

Sheep, these will be Herdwick (Herdys)
Pigs, not sure but the boss says, Mangoletsa, Ironage or Tamworth.
