Title: Lamb with strong wee/ purple stain?
Post by: Hillview Farm on April 19, 2014, 09:53:04 pm
So our 4 week old, newly orphaned ewe lamb has got extremely extremely strong wee. In fact it doesn't smell of wee it smells of ammonia and hurts my nose! Since the smell suddenly appeared she has a purple ish stain appear on her back end.

Do I put the  strength down to the fact she Is not drinking enough? Is the purple stain off the hay they are bedded on? Is this red water? Any advice greatly welcome!

give her skin a gentle pinch to check hydration, but  she sounds pretty dehydrated to me.  how much is she drinking at each sitting.  get hold of some rehydion, brill stuff and electrolyte gel.    if you can smell it that bad she may be burning her skin a little??

She's definitely not drinking enough, if she's got wee you can smell that badly!

How much milk is she getting? And does she have access to water inbetween?

She's fine in herself, there is water at all times, picked her skin and ITs sinking straight away. We are really struggling at getting milk down her atm.
