I know the motor trade use Glass's Guide. My reason for wanting to know is as follows.
My van has got to the stage where I doubt it is worth having fully comp insurance. It is a 56 plate astravan with 89k on the clock. My insurance renewal is quoted at £252 fully comp and I'm wondering if I should go just third party at this stage. Similar vans are advertised for sale £2k - £3k but they look a bit optimistic to me. I think my van would sell for £500 - £1000 depending on how much effort I put into it. My insurer has the vehicle value at £4k. Surely they don't mean they'd give me £4k if my van was stolen. If I revised the current value of the van down to £2k then I imagine the premium would also drop? Being underinsured isn't a good idea but being overinsured is also silly.

I use Parkers (http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/prices/).

It seems to make no difference what the value of your vehicle is, they only pay out what they think it's worth anyway, I don't think reducing it by a couple of thousand will make any difference to your premium. I have also found that some insurance companies actually charge as much for third party. Try some of the comparison websites putting in different values and fully comp/third party.

Beware; just the fact that you even ask about third party can put your quote up and can be nearly as much as fully comp!

I just sold my broken peugeot partner van, 51 reg, 104,000 on the clock for £550 at auction.
It was BROKEN, I didn't clean it and it was still sign written
To be honest I'd have said 1500 - 2000 maybe more, have a look at autotrader van, if nothing else it'll show you that you can't really buy a van for less than a grand if it works

Quite often rd party is dearer than fully comp, particularly on vans as it is judged as a reflection of how little the owner cares about their vehicle. If you did crash it or it got nicked etc. they only pay out what it would cost to buy as near to an identical replacement as possible. Best way to reduce your policy is to make sure you don't have yourself down as doing a higher mileage than you do. Some give discounts if you do not regularly drive in peak times. To be honest though, I don't think £252 is a high price at all.

I pay 600-700 a year, I haven't had a bump in 25 years and no points since 1984 @ 252 I'd be happy

I just insured my Nissan X Trail with Hastings 0800 00 1066. Fully comp and all the extras £186.
£58 cheaper than Churchill and that was on a Rav 4 TPFT.

I don't think its just about what your van is worth, it's as much about them having to pay out for anything you bump into, just checked our transit connect from last year, 06 reg - £347.
we did ask about 3rd party and it was dearer.

Thank you all for your input. It sounds as though I should just be grateful for the quote I've got. Also re my other post Itchy Bites I'm going to have to deflea my van's seats/upholstery!
