Title: sore eye on my Frizzle chicken
Post by: amanda on September 26, 2009, 11:32:46 pm
Hi all, Im new to this site, my friends are members on here and said how friendly and helpful you all are!!
I'm a fairly new chicken owner, i have just bought some Polish frizzle chickens and one seems to have a bad eye. :-[ It is closed and looks a little sore on the eye lid, it also have a very tiny bit of gunge in it. i have spoke to breeder who advised to bathe it but just wondered if anyone else has dealt with anything like this before?
Cheers A. :)

I would bathe it too.  Clean cooled boiled water with a tiny bit salt - or optrex.  Just the same as for kids with sticky eye

The only chickens of mine that have ever had eye problems have been Polish. If it is not getting better by Monday I would ring a vet and ask for either Baytril (antibiotic) or a local application.  :notwell:If left too long the chicken may loose the eye - as one of mine did, but lived a normal life afterwards. Try not to have a consultation as it will cost more than the chicken is worth and not many vets know much about chickens. My vet will usually give me what I ask for as I have sheep, cows etc and usually do most of the treatments myself. Hope this helps and your chicken is better soon.  :chook:

yep nip to a vet and ask for a cream for an infected eye. the washing should do it but it better to be safe than sorry. we had a very manky eye on a turkey but after a few days of cream it recovered.

Yes, and charged a fortune probably.  I agree - call fro advice only and medication.  Tell them you don't need a consultation.

I took my dog to the vet with a rash on his belly. They gave some ointment and charged me £50 for the pleasure!!! The dog got the rash again a few weeks later (he does love the most disgusting, smelly green puddles!!!). I bathed it morning and night for a while in salt water and it went away!!!!
Vets REALLY get my goat!!!!   >:(

Salt water is my panacea!!! Just don't make it too salty if using it around the eye area.

then your vets out to make money. you should not need to take the chicken to a vet for something simple like a manky eye. all it will do is add 8-20 quid to the bill. is rhe vet a farm one or a small animal practice. our vet laughed when we took our first hen in he does not now the little girl left him with deep scratches down his arms.

Agreed, Amanda - change your vet.  Don't waste money on a visit - it's an absolute con.  Try the remedies put on here first, and if that doesn't work phone another vet.

have you tried your local pharmacist? ask for the cream for conjunctivitis you can buy it without a prescription it worked on our goose who had a very mucky eye.

Hi all, i visited the vet today as the chicken was not behaving the same as the others and was very quiet, he told me the chicken had sinusitis, washed his nostrils through and gave me eye drops and antibioctics  :-\, i'm hoping the chicken will be a bit better in the morning! I live in Cornwall and there are not many, if any, good chicken vets, (or none that i've heard of) in my area, although the vet i saw today does deal with birds and exotics creatures.

Was that expensive?  Wonder if you can get pet insurance for chickens ;)

use the eye drops he gave you for number one chicken.  it may not look the same to you but there is a likelyhood it is.
