Post by: kelly58 on March 17, 2014, 11:27:28 am
I feed my  :sheep: sheep mix, bruised barley and soaked sugar beet shreds. On looking through older post you guys mention 'cake' what is it ? Dont tell me to bake, dont have the time  :roflanim: Allways something to learn  !

We just use the word 'cake' for what you might call mix, nuts etc. etc. - just compound feed of some sort. Absolutely no idea why!

I'd like to know what coarse mix people feed their sheep. My girls went mad for the ram mix I bought in for our loaned tup but I can only get hold of nuts from my local supplier or Wynnstays.

I don't think your sheep would turn their noses up at baked goods...my girls love a digestive biscuit or slice of bread!  :roflanim:

Will try Cheers !

My girls like the ram mix too but its dearer that ewe nuts so they don't get much. They do love a bit of brown bread though and will pinch the bag (meant for the ducks and chickens) out of my pocket.

Bran Flakes. My in-laws bought Asda Bran Flakes and didn't like them so brought them over for whatever animal would eat them. I took some round for the sheep and they nearly ate ME - even a few of the hoggs were clamouring for them although they're not hand tame yet.

Expensive to feed on a commercial scale though  ;D

We just feed whatever good quality 18% protein pellet is cheapest - generally Marriage's or BOCM in this area.  My ag. merchant is now used to me doing the sharp intake of breath followed by "How much?!"

My lot get ewe rolls in the morning and course mix in the evening. Add lib bucket blocks and salt lick.
I start lambing at the end of the month. Last year the first lamb was born into a blizzard.

pregnant ones having 'flakey 16' from the local co op, plus a splash of ewe 18.

lambed ones have ewe 18, maybe with a splash of flaky for a bit of variety lol x

Smee, try asking for sheep  coarse mix at your Wynnstay store, they definitely sell it at their branch in Rhuthun. If they don't have any customers using it at the moment they can easily get it in for you. I find them really helpful like that.
(Sorry about the spelling mistakes on the original post. I am clearly not at my best after bottle feeding at dawn!!)

Should you feed ram mix to ewes or ewe mix to rams?

Ram mix to ewes no problem, although pre- and post-lambing they maybe would be better with a ration formulated especially for the job they are doing ;).

Ewe mix to rams - no, never.  The males (entires and castrated, so rams and wethers) can get urinary calculi from feed which isn't formulated especially for them.  If you are feeding a non-specific feed to males, make sure they have plenty of water, and salt licks.

I feed general purpose coarse mix from wynnstay to the girls, think its 17% protein, and the equivalant ram mix to the boys. They all get a variety of scraps and stale bread aswell. Of course all the scraps have been prepared outside and have not even seen my kitchen. Cos that would be illegal right? ;)
