My little girl wants to make pom poms
Anyone got any easy instructions that an eleven year old could follow to make ones
of varying sizes?
Also she has a wooden doll with hooks on top for knitting - but no instructions and I
cannot think for the life in me how to do it - any help gratefully received :-*

:farmer:Hello little girl You definitely wont remember but ask Nana. The morning milk came in pint bottles in the 1940's and was sealed with a card stopper. This was a waxed stiff circle of card that fitted the top of the bottle and had a hole through the center about 1/2" diameter. The girls saved all the short ends from Mams knitting and swapped each other so they all had multi coloured pom poms So trap a piece with your thumb on to the disc and just keep threading the wool through the hole.over and over until the hole is full when this is done carefully cut through all the strands to the edge of the card DO NOT PULL THE CARD OFF THE WOOL YET Get some strong button thread and tie the strands as close to the hole in the card as possible pull the thread tight as you can Now cut the card from the rim to the hole and remove it You now have a ball of wool fluff it up in your hands and snip off any long strands with a sharp pair of scissors Thats your POM POM but how do you fix it to your project? Easy on the other side to your button thread tie a double piece of wool about 9" long There you are a POM POM on a securing piece of wool Lovely its a long time since I have seen one done.A helpfull tip.If you want to make a 3" one increase the center hole to 3/4" or your finished POM POM will be short of hair and floppy and not at all nice.Go on have a go and tell us all how you get on. :)

Any way little girl ask Nana how to do French knitting.Get a nice clean cotton reel and knock 4 small panel pins in one end with about 1/2" of pin stuck up forming a square equal sided round the hole. draw a piece of wool through the hole in the center and loop it around the nails twice Then with a bodkin loop the bottom row of wool over the top row and keep winding the wool round the nails and the bottom over the top.You will find you get a long tube of wool the more you wind round the longer the tube. When you think you have enough set of in a center and sew the tube together you can make a grand hat or teapot stands so the hot pot doesn't scorch the table alsorts Have a play George
