Title: escaping barnvelders

Hi anyone got any advice on keeping barnvelders in their six foot tall pen. They are just about to come into lay so i want to ensure they lay in the nest boxes not under a bush in the garden to be discovered weeks later! i have already clipped their wings, but they still seem to get enough uplift to get to the top of the fence and out.

Agree, just the one wing is more effective.  Depends how much you trimmed it will help if you unbalance them a bit to stop them flying.
I really shouldnt laugh but it's very amusing watching young orpingtons trying to launch.

If you look on Agrigame's website you'll see netting which pheasant rearers drape over the top of game panels.  This is comparatively cheap, can be tied in place with string, and works.

thanks for the help - i did just clip one wing, maybe i need to take away more feathers. i will try to clip them a bit more at the weekend and see if i can stop them escaping

Are you seeing them fly out or are they getting out another way i.e. hopping up using the shed or have found a gap ?

definately flying, chasing them back in when I catch them at it  :D
