Title: The weather
Post by: twizzel on February 04, 2014, 04:33:24 pm
 :-\
Anyone else bracing themselves for tonight? The latest storm has hit Cornwall and it's a huge one, 70mph winds and yet more torrential rain. I don't know how much more of this we can take!
A pub local to us that is situated on a beach has gutted the inside as they are pretty certain the sea will take it tonight, damage limitation  :-[  very sad... and scary. Keep safe people :)

I feel so sorry for those poor people in Somerset yet another load of water coming their way. We still have flooded fields here but it looks puny to what they are experiencing. We are braced for another storm. Batten down the hatches folks here we go again. :raining:

We're also in Cornwall -  though a bit further west than you Twizzel. Currently sitting in the house listening to the wind howling outside, but we are dry so a lot better off than some others.
Hang in there all

Got the ewes in the shed this afternoon, everything is batteneddown  to within an inch of its life, the rams are in the old stable where we have them at keep and the tegs in the most sheltered field.  The poultry houses are under cover, the pig sties well bedded .....  If the winds are that bad the tin roofs on the sheds are always a concern.  We've opened all non-essential doors and gates to give less resistance to the gale.  Fingers crossed (seems to have happened quite a lot this Winter).

Oh well , having fun here !
The roof on my shed may well go tonight .
It is lifting with the gusts , had a pile of corrugated iron blowing around my yard , they had 2 lorry wheels on top of them and have been where they were for 10 years . The caravan roof may go too ! The wind is hammering the crap out of it .
Fun collecting corri sheets in the dark and this wind .
Feck me ! The roof nearly went then ! Lol , gonna be fun if this wind picks up anymore .
Never been this bad before . Oh here we go again !
Phew ! Still here , just .
I think one of the farm sheds may have just gone , mine are still here .

Getting hammered here atm . Have had 100 mph winds here before , but nothing like this .
This is feckin scary .
Must be one of the farm sheds gone , the noise is unbelievable . It is either a shed or the back of an old lorry .
Christ , gusts hitting very hard atm , something has to go .

Just had a bit of an adventure trying to move my car from the seafront at Exmouth. Took me ten minutes to get the door open and then a lovely passer by helped me close it! I couldn't thank him properly due to the noise of the wind!

The sea came over the wall two days ago and with high tide at ten pm it probably will do again and then onto our road. Lucky we are a first floor flat....

Just hope the animals are ok-they are half an hour more inland so should be ok...

Ok atm mojo !
The wind is coming in waves . Hits very hard in gust after gust , then eases for a bit . Then comes back stronger .
Can't see the farm sheds , i am behind 2 , so they are ok at least . But the noise when the wind comes is unbeilable . My shed roofs are there atm ,  i got hit by a branch of the huge ash tree that my caravan is right under  . I had a horse riding helmet on so am ok . The main part of the branch missed me by inches , i would be a gonna if it had hit me .
Clearing up in between bouts of wind , then getting in quick when it comes back .
Daren't open the door when it is blowing , the door would go , and maybe the caravan too , it may go anyway !
We seem to be having a lull atm . Phew !
I am knackered , lol . Time for a coffee , and must charge up the phone in case everything goes . Take care everyone .

23.00 it's still blowing rain soaked hoolies here in SA14 3BZ.

Like Rusty said , it's like it is coming in waves , every tenth one being a real tile rattler .
I hope the new solar PV array is OK ..at least it's insured for storm damage.

Has the hose pipe ban been lifted in Somerset yet ?  :roflanim:

There are some good articles on the NAO ( North Atlantic oscillation ) being in a negative phase ..jet streams are moving the opposite way to normal years hence the evil weather around the world .
(Google NAO and follow a few links in it once you read the initial info ).

Couple this with the massive sunspot thing that peeked around   Dec 2012 and the solar winds that have formed as a result( before & after ) it is little wonder we're having it lousy big time .

It  could be like the early 1960's as conditions and events are fairly similar apparently .

Pretty wild here and coming in gusts. It seems to be seeping round the windows, even though they're double glazed units. Hope they're safe.

11.44pm and it has passed , mainly , now . Can still hear it in the distance , with the odd blast returning .
My face was covered in blood , thought i was going to have to sew my face back on judging by the amount , but it was just a tiny scratch , lol .
So everything ok here so far .
All the sheds were ok on the farm too , but there is  the remains of a static caravan spread all over the place .
Hope everyone is ok .
Just heard that 14,000
homes without leccy and roads closed all over due to trees blown over . Heard lots of sirens , don't know what they were , police , ambulance etc but there were lots of them .

We have been spoilt this winter in Essex ... and long may that continue!

Finally died away down here (South Somerset) although we have seemingly permanent buckets out to catch the drips at the end of the house where we have a bay that gets hammered. All our windows also leak (including stone mullions where it soaks through the seams and around the frames). Always a bit tense when it is this bad. If we don't regularly inspect and clear our drainage ditches and pipes (often midnight trips with a torch and if necessary drain rods) our neighbours who are downhill from us can flood. We also have to be on the ball with sandbags or the stones from our drive slide down the hill leaving us with a muddy slope and the corner of our barn can flood. The problem is with all the runoff from the fields higher than us. We end up with a number of waterfalls coming over the hedgebank and springs popping up everywhere. Quite a few local roads also flood making driving sometimes a bit hairy (I nearly drowned my car just before Christmas trying to escape being trapped between two floods. OH DID drown his car last February on a trip down here to view this house; blowing the engine). However we count ourselves lucky. The damage is fixable. My heart goes out to those living in the flood zones elsewhere.

Not too bad here ..we live on the lee side of a hill from the prevailing storms, our weather can be 1005 different from that of the other side of the hills around us.

Lots of run off still coming off the hills over the roads as I drove to Cross hands and back on the A48 this morning at 9.00hrs. .

Those sheep in the submerged fields are no longer there Yipeee!
They seem to be much higher up the hill in a much better  field that also has a bit of shelter from a hedge& tree line. This time with feed troughs in place.

We have quite a few lumps of one inch thick branch/bits of wood off the oaks at the bottom of the garden but so far the root systems still seem strongly set in the bank work where the gardens were made level .

In the early hours of this morning after one particularly big  blow ( It sounded like a London under ground train coming into the station at high speed but for a much longer period ) I had visions of finding one or more of the big oak  trees heeled over and pushing the pond & office log cabin up in the air.  So far so good it ,was all still OK at 08.30 hrs.this morning.

OH reckons early this morning was worse than the 1987 storm :-\ :-\ .  It's blowing straight off the sea in great blasts although the rain has eased :relief: .  Can barely stand up outside but I have to go to buy more animal feed (guess who accepted 18 rescue chickens yeterday ::) ).  Stay safe TASers :fc:

Terrible here in SA32 too, was very worried that my hen and duck houses wouldn't survive last night but they did :relief: fingers crossed for tonight as well because if we have been having 40mph wind so far, I really don't want to think about the 70mph we're supposed to be getting later :o

Also have an array of buckets and saucepans collecting water in my dining room ::)

Hope you all stay safe.

Any hay stack type netting and loads of bricks that you can weigh down on the roof's and stake to the ground ??  Think Gulliver when he was tied down tight with hundreds of strands of thick thread.

Thanks for that Mrs Pea .... hadn't realised the worst was yet to come!!!!

So glad I at last gave in yesterday and brought half sheep in(3 weeks earlier than planned)   and brought rest up to field near house.... no trying to get food out to them today through the water coming down and on the ground!!

After an horrendous night  we have lost tiles off the roof and our upstairs landing has water being collected  in bowls, rendering blown off the side of the house, and a river running through the bottom sheep shed, good job there was nothing in it. our normally placid brook is a raging torrent now and more to come .

Well , another windy day here .
Torrential rain this afternoon with very strong wind , i got soaked to the skin .
Walked the 3 miles to the land and when i got there , the land was gone !
Well ok , not really . The track is just unbelievable , mud and running water , no trees down in the woods though ! None of the big ash , beech or maple down on the land either .
Did the usual , arse over tit  in the mud and crap bit .  Washed jeans and coat in one of the new waterfalls  along the track . I was already soaked anyway , so made no difference .
Wind is picking up again atm , 6pm , but from the west this time . Think it was from SE last night , so the caravan isn't wobbling as much .
Don't like the sound of the 'monster storm' , i keep hearing people mention , that is ment to be on the way !

Tuesday night some houses by us evacuated, Wednesday lots of people evacuated, we lost 1/3 of the roof & the chimney, our local leisure centre & a school are shelters for the evacuees, approx. 300 homes without power, some children's parents were unable to pick their children up yesterday so a number of them stayed the night at school with the other families, the road is closed both ways from our place took over an hour to get to the school 1 1/2 miles. Not really eased here, mind you I'm not sure if I'm awake due to wind, worry or the fact that I'm so uncomfortable trying to sleep in a strange place in a sleeping bag. (we are very grateful for the support we are receiving) wouldn't be British if we didn't moan.
Our chickens are in the hands of the gods, now I wish I'd fitted auto doors to the pens.
We see this kind of thing on tv we don't experience it, the good thing is everyone is getting to know their neighbours, I've never seen so many tears in my entire life, In a few days people are going to need to find somewhere to live, we certainly hadn't budgeted for renting somewhere, will our insurance cover us ?
I'm sure rents will go up round here tomorrow.

Good luck to ye all, spare a thought for your neighbours please.

I know because my grandparents are going through the same thing have been since beginning of December .

:fc: you get things sorted Andyjn.

I think the SW is getting the worst of this weather (yesterday wasn't bad here - but that may be 'cos I'm sheltered from the west).

The bad news is another storm is forecast coming in late on Friday/ Saturday am so don't unbatten anything yet; perhaps more westerly so should be less damaging on the south coast.

Just awful.  Really feel for all of you affected so badly by this weather.  Yes, its a bit muddy here and the Avon is about to breach but compared to the scenes on the News we are incredibly lucky.
I think I speak for so many fellow smallholders when i say we feel so helpless, i wish we could do more. We've donated towards the forage aid campaign but it seems such a small gesture as people lose their homes, livestock and livelihoods  :(

80 mph winds due this weekend so going to stay indoors and hope everything stays put. we've sprung a leak down past the flashing on the chimney, mainly because the wind is always from that direction.
Nothing compared to some   to you all stay safe. be glad when this is all over.
