Title: Six Nations Rugby
Post by: Bramblecot on February 01, 2014, 06:11:16 pm
I gather the rugby has started :innocent: .
Has anyone else lost their OH for the next few weeks? I can't stop :roflanim: :roflanim: that our mates take it so seriously.
Now will this put the cat amongst the pigeons :stir: or are smallholders too busy to care about this sport?

This smallholder cares very much! Sadly, England just managed to snatch defeat from the French. Wales vs Italy was good match, much closer than might have been expected. Bribg on Ireland vs Scotland tomorrow. Lots more shouting at the TV!

as a young man I used to be really into it and would be inconsolable if we lost, I still watch rugby with a passion for the game but I don't collapse into tears when we lose now.
I thought we (England) were unlucky, but that we gave too much to the French in the 1st half. Any French team is always capable of scoring a try like the one that finished us off, that's why you can't play like we did at time in the 1st half.
Wales looked poor I thought, they certainly weren't firing on all cylinders. But they started slow last year as well, so there's a lot of room for improvement.

My thoughts exactly. You can never give the a French an inch, especially after their poor show last year, they are out to prove they can play! I think the championship could be quite close this year.

Come on WALES  :excited:
I'll second that. But we'll have to be better to beat the Irish next week. Italy were tough opponents though.

Yesterday I had a day off to watch the rugby. The OH passed me beer, kept the fire stacked up and 2 minutes after the final whistle of the French game served up Cod,chips and mushy peas !! ( Quite an achievement as we live in France).

I agree that Wales looked poor despite doing so well in recent years - France were fortunate so it will be interesting to see who wins today.

I must say Italy ( or Argentina) are much improved over the last couple of years , they are now becoming a competent team who can take on anyone, well done them.

I haven't really watched it since it became professional. Dan watched the second half on England France and said it was a really good game - we thought England were going to win.

Hope Scotland do better that they seem to have in recent years - but you can never have too many wooden spoons  ::)

Needless to say Rosemary - they didn't do well.
First half was ok but it then went downhill and quickly.
I now regret not continuing to work on the land drain that we're putting in - it would have been a more constructive afternoon I fear.

Roll on next week - Calcutta cup time again at Murrayfield.
Its bound to be a win for Scotland  :o

You think so?! I think it could be close, but my vote goes to England!
Title: Re: Six Nations Rugby

Modern international rugby certainly takes on a different format after 50 minutes. All the substitutions changes the shape of a team and the old fashioned physical and psychologcal battlesare no more. I only caught the last 20 minutes of the Irish game and found it so boring. Bring back the challenge of a scrum that yields as someone wins a  the psychological or someone is just too exhausted to continue to compete against someone with superior strength or technique.
I don't think that France will win the wooden spoon again or the championship come to that. Sadley I think that the Italy has carved the the Scots name on the wooden spoon and Ireland will wax and wain. Wales or England to win the championship but home advantage will probabley give England the better chance.

How disapointing ! I had expected to see this thread littered with comments on how the English beat the Scots yesterday. Maybe the English are not nationalistic , just just too PC and polite or simply have no wish to rub the noses of their Scottish neighbours in the mud of Murayfield ( again!)

IF (and that is a BIG IF) Scotland get chucked out future tournaments and get replaced by Argentine....Italy will have to find some new players.... :innocent:

Why would Scotland be thrown out the Six Nations? There has to be a whipping boy ;)

Well I have to say, I wished that I had started on the wine yesterday.
I only watched the second half but really...dear god...words fail me.
Absolutely shocking.
Scotland wont get the wooden spoon as they'll not be able to catch it - they'd likely drop it.

Some butts had better be whipped on Monday (and I don't mean in that sense Mandy and Louise so behave yourselves  :o)

I don't enjoy rugby any more - the rules are too complicated and it's all stop / start - but I did see a wee bit on Saturday as I wandered through the living room, and the Scottish game seemed to be littered with "schoolboy errors" - like just dropping the ball. If they want to drop the ball, they can go play for the English cricket team  ;D

At this rate we are going to have to play as a UNITED Kingdom  ;D in order to beat the wretched French :innocent: .  Poor old  :chook: :chook: (Italians)

I was in a panic on Friday. The BBC transmissions moved to the new Astra satellite and we lost all the signals down here. Fortunately we brought an indoor aerial with us and tuned into the basic French TV. France 2 HD is showing all the matches fortunately -weren't Ireland impressive!

It is often the way after a Lions tour that France take the championship as they are less tired than the home teams. I feel Warren Gatland is paying the price for taking so many if the Welsh team on your, they are looking tired and lack lustre. Not sure what excuse the Scots have other than a b awful pitch at Murrayfield. I feel it could be Ireland or France for the championship this year, heart wants Ireland, head says France!

Another good weekend of rugby! Especially today, great England victory and triple crown. I still think Ireland will take the championship, which will be a fitting ending for Brian O' Driscoll, who has been such a stalwart for the Irish team!

When I played the game the Welsh were comming towards the end of their dominance but every year the Welsh who I played with would give me grief if they won but come the English wins they were never to be seen. I never did get my revenge.
England completeley shut out what we had considered to be a good Welsh team. Wales looked very poor so I guess this just shows how good England are.
Title: Re: Six Nations Rugby

and don't forget, that was not a full strength England team, without our 1st choice props or wings. We're a team that still has better results in them. Probably peaking too late for 2015, but who knows...
