Title: Newburgh Orchard Group, Fife February 2014 events
Post by: ellied on January 26, 2014, 10:56:06 am
If anyone is interested our Orchard Group is running 2 events in February 2014.

The first is winter pruning of fruit trees at 1pm on Sunday 9 Feb in Newburgh.  Details to follow when I receive them from the organisers.

The second is grafting (details below) and I am booked to attend. If demand is high then it will be run in the morning as well as the afternoon of 16 February.

The Apple Tree Grafting Workshop, Buittle Gardens, Auchtermuchty
NOG has run apple tree grafting workshops for several years now. If you are interested in grafting your own trees or unusual, local or heritage varieties you can book a place. NOG is especially interested in trying to preserve old or unusual varieties of trees from the Newburgh area. The workshop guides you in a practical session to graft 2 trees on to rootstock. Places are priced @ £10 for 2 trees – the fee covers the cost of the equipment etc; you keep the two trees you have grafted. If you have a tree that you would like us to preserve we can take scion wood for grafting; although not all heritage trees are available for grafting at the date, but we grow 200+ varieties in Buittle Gardens.
The workshop includes free tea/coffee and homebake!
To book a place please email [email protected] workshop will be held , at Buittle, Auchtermuchty - exact location details will be forwarded on application.

That's sounds brill.
We became the owners of a bramley and a Damson yesterday - very kind and gratefully received house warming gift from a couple of friends of ours.

Ellied - do the group have a website/mailing list/newsletter at all?
I'd be interested for future years.

Sorry, didn't see this til today when browsing other new events!

If you email the address given for the grafting day that's Gerben who is also the Secretary of the Orchard Group and will gladly add you to the  mailing list.

The website is somewhat dated and I had offered to do them at least an interim free webs site while they decide on a future direction, but it appears to be somebody's pride and joy so I backed out gently.  They have taken the thought on board tho and are apparently considering making a Facebook site or group tho I'm not really a FB fan so wouldn't be on it..  C'est la vie.

Anyway, well worth joining, they have open meetings and all events seem to be open to visitors rather than just members, very reasonable prices to cover costs alone, and a great bunch of people even to my social anxiety level (it's taken me over a year and I've still not been to a meeting but the events are now ok for me!).  Just don't go to the meeting where they debate the prices to set for the annual plum and apple markets, they're apparently quite loud..
