Title: Pigs near houses
Post by: Garden Farm on September 07, 2009, 02:41:36 pm
I'm sure this has been covered before, but a friend asked me this question the other day and I didn't know the answer. Are there any laws about keeping pigs near other peoples houses, they have some rough grazing land which backs a housing estate and want it cleared so asked us if we would considering running some of our pigs on there for a while to gradually clear the ground. We'd though that we'd leave a 12 metre border between the pigs and the gardens. Any thoughts on this most welcome....

Don't know of any laws...but better check with the neighbours before putting your pigs on...they might object...also I'd be very wary of teenage (or even younger) kids causing harm or teasing the pigs...finally, if you go ahead and decide to use electric fencing YOU MUST post notices...can lead to a heavy fine if someone gets a shock.

I wouldn't risk just electric fences, I had thought about the risk of people causing a nuisance, its on the edge of the village and a field that used to be farmed for salad crops years ago so proper agricultural land, seems a shame not to make the most of it as the offer is there. thanks for your thoughts.

Possibly ask local council if there are any problems with this.  Sounds like a great idea.  Maybe even make some people realise where their bacon comes from.

Theres a law about distance between house and sheds, think its 3metres. But sounds like that won't affect you!
Check with a) Local office (defra)
                b) Environmental dept of county council
                c) parish council
And anyone else you can think of..........just to prove that you've checked!
