Around our house I have heard Tawny owls very occasionally (perhaps only 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years).
At Christmas I was given a Tawny Owl box which is now in a tree at the edge of our woods. The day after I put it up we heard an owl and since then have heard it a couple of times a week. I don't know who is more excited about the coming nesting season - the owl or me!
Now I think I will get a nest box for the Kestrel that turns up once a month...........

Excellent  and kestrels, which used to be so common, now seem to be struggling.
Keep us informed of any nests you get, but don't be disappointed if they're not occupied this year as they will be eventually.

Do you have a wildlife trust in your County? Some might be willing to check the box during the year - wouldn't advise doing it yourself as Tawny Owls are fierce and will take out your eye as soon as look at you. Watch out that squirrels or jackdaws don't get in first.

MF, I think I would rather just leave the box and I will check it in the autumn when there is no chance of disturbing anything. I was bitten by a shag yesterday and was amazed at the strength of their bite but that is another story.
There are no grey squirrels and very few reds in our area also hardly any jackdaws (just hooded/carrion crows) so hopefully the box will be left for owls.
