Hello!
Long time, no see! I am really curios if some of you have tattoos (you, not your pet). Don't laugh, I'm looking forward to getting a new tattoo (somehow pet related), but I need to ask something about it. I'm not 100% I'll have it, but I'm curios if someone else has something related. I want to get a horse tattoo because it means freedom, speed and strength (found more about it here (http://www.tattooneed.com/meaning-of-horse-tattoos/)). This will be my first tattoo, so I'm not really sure about it. How it goes and such. :unwell:
One more thing - hope I am in the right section, because this question/topic is kinda offtopic.
-
So far I have four tattoos, two of them horsey related! I have a little unicorn bust on the top of my arm and a pegasus on my shoulder blade.
If your worried about the pain, I would say, don't be. They do hurt but none of mine hurt enough for me to not want it done, you just kind of get through the pain and then forget about it after! Places that are especially boney tend to hurt more, like lower back and feet.
Good luck, I love tattoos
-
I don't have any as I think they are absolutely awful. But thats just my opinion
-
I have a zip tat over a long scar. :) My only tattoo.
-
No. I do sometimes think they look good on other people, but wouldn't want one myself. Also I am a massive wimp.
-
I have 3 tattoos. I have 2 elephants on my arm ( used to work with them when I was a zoo keeper). One I drew myself, the other is of one of the elephants I worked with
Also have the name of an ex on my lower back ( as a reminder that no f^*#er will get away with s**t like that ever again  ).
If I had another one it would be something to do with chickens :chook:
-
i have 2.
-
'If found please return to ..................'
-
though they've never appealed to me I was always ambiguous about them, then one day a woman I worked with (we were both accountants) got one and I thought to myself, if accountants are getting tattoo's they've pretty much lost their cool.
-
I have a tattooist friend and I admire greatly the work he does. However, I think they are an aberration and would not have any myself. I have a beautiful skin that my parents gifted to me when I was born, so why would I want to spoil it! JMHO
-
I agree with Doganjo, I think they are mutilation just like piercings of various body parts, ears, noses..other bits
-
My dad had a swallow on each hand worked, done when he went to sea at 15, he said as he got older and went for 'serious' jobs, he felt that the tattoos where a disadvantage. He always said to me, 'if you ever get a tattoo, get it in a place where it is up to us to you if it is displayed or not'. I took his advice and have two tattoos a devil on my belly that has grown with my stomach and shrunk with my stomach and grown with my stomach (weight on, weight off ;D ). I hadn't seen it for 5 years and one day there it was looking at me in the mirror, :roflanim: Who needs a malory belt. Then I had odie from Garfield done on the top of my thigh. I had these done in my late teens / early 20's. I would like to get another couple of tattoos that actual have a more deeper meaning but alas the cost cannot justify the tattoo being done. Especially as I'm saving to have my own small holding. My advice would be think long and hard about what you want and where you want it. :)
-
A tattoo that you have done when you are young will look hideous when you get old , they always look cheap and nasty, they are not art, just tribal markings for people that want to belong to a misguided crowd, In my eyes it is a form of self harm that speaks volumes about the person .
-
Personally I am not a fan of Tattoos or piercings, never fancied either but can see the attraction for some people.
I hate to see people covered in them to the point you cant work out what any of them are :-\
My theory is if you where meant to have pictures or holes on/in our body you would be born with them ::)
-
I am up to 8 self mutilating tattoos at present and will no doubt have more.
each one marks a time or event in my life and are personal to me. I care not a jot what other people's opinions of them or me are, its my body and my money and I will do with it as I please.
having said that, its a permanent thing unless you consider removal at a later date, but if you are thinking about that then dont get one to begin with.
men have told me they find them a little intimidating until they actually talk to me and realise they are just part of me and I am not in the least bit intimidating. It hasnt prevented me from working in healthcare and social services.
whatever you do, make sure you love it as its going to be there longer than you are! Oh and it only hurts for the first 5 mins, my partner painted my nails for me when I was having one of my larger ones done ;D
oh and I have various piercings, ears, nose, tragus, belly button...........dont make me freak ;)
-
I was given a tiny one when I had cancer so they knew where they had to line the machine. I found getting this painful enough. One of my friends has a rearing horse down her back. How she sat for that beats me. Not brave enough to get a proper one although I have seen some real pretty ones.
-
I have a tattoo on my arm, from many years ago
would i do it again,
probable not.
-
I personally would never have one as I don't like them. One of my former students is covered with them (so he tells me) including (and I've seen this one) the whole of Desiderata on his back.
-
I have a zip tat over a long scar. :) My only tattoo.
I like that, but in general I don't like tattoos and I detest piercings especially in the mouth and genitals. Occasionally a really small and delicate tattoo on a woman looks tasteful, but wherever it is I can't help wondering what it will be like after 50 years of gravity - a bit Salvador Dali.
-
Salvador dali?.......that will do me fine, fantastic artist :-J
-
Anyway back to OP......
do your research, find a tattooist you trust and will take your ideas and make them into a unique work of art and will make you feel comfortable. Dont be tempted to go for the cheap off-the-shelf option, get something that will make you smile when you see it everyday, let us know and pics if possible when/if you go for it
-
I have worked as a nurse for 30 years so over the years I have seen an awful lot of old tattoos, in the 80's it was usually old sailors or solders who had them on their arms, and black pit scars, some men had them all over their backs and arms. I have never seen an old tattoo that looks nice, they usually bleed colour over time and end up an unreadable blob and that why I would never advise anyone to have one where they could not cover it up when they wanted too.
I think the fashion for very young people having them over large visible areas is a bit sad, you change so much from your 20's, the old men that I looked after may have regretted having them done but at least they must have mostly been done when they were young and needed to belong and be part of something greater and not done for fashion.
-
go for the best artist you can.
mine was the guy who did brad pits henna ones in the movie fight club. he was very very good. the reason iv never got a third one is that he would be a hard act to follow and im scared of a botch job. my ex-husband had an awful one of the waves crashing on his arm but it really did look like a human brain - urgh i expect hes crossed my name out now too :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim:
think of where you get it done, mine are all hidden ie shoulder and hip, but i saw a girl in a shop the other day and she had awful tattoos all over her lower arms. not a good look.
-
'nother reason I'd not get a tattoo is the cost; even a small one costs something like £100 I'm told, I could buy a new scythe for that!!!
-
I am disgusted by tattoos, they are ridiculous and unnecessary
I have, two, a tribal dragon on my right arm, and a howling wolf, moon, mountain combo half sleeve on the left
-

'Self harm' - bit strong that Tiz, not even vaguely in the same ball park
-
I think tattoos are horrible. I have never seen a 'nice' one yet!
As for putting all these Chinese or Japanese symbols and writing permanently on your skin. Why?
Here in Spain I see the locals wearing cheap tee shirts with badly spelt English sayings on them or as I saw last week , " I an rellay layed bok"
God only knows what the Chinese stuff says :roflanim:
Needless to say I do not have any tattoos.........
-
Wow, that's a lot of judgemental negative responses, I wouldn't have expected so much here and find it quite hard to read actually.
I am one of those rare people that grew up at a time when everyone started getting their ears pierced and I never did, never saw the point and always thought things dangling from holes in my ears was a danger when I spent so much time around animals and doing physical activities that risked them being ripped.
That said, I got my first tattoo in my early 40s, a phoenix, at the time I took voluntary redundancy from a well paid successful career after multiple bereavements left me in a complete state of despair and feeling I wasn't earning my salary or interested in my work any more and that life had pretty much come to a turning point or an end and I wanted it to be the former so put my determination into the process of taking on the pain and making something of it, quite literally a new life. If that is self harm or monstrous mutilation, that's your judgement. To me it was the alternative to far worse things and a statement of intent that kept me focused on being committed to starting over and not giving up. it's on my lower leg and ankle, trailing down onto the top and side of my foot and yes the foot part hurt more than I realised it would, but the rest was ok and I have no regrets.
Actually since life has gone that way again in recent months, I've started a new tattoo, a tree. It looks dreadful right now as I can't afford a session very often and may take a year to complete at this rate, but that's ok too. I don't care what people think of my body as a result of having a tattoo when I have been convinced all my life that my body is disgusting in any case, it makes no difference whatever if people don't understand what I'm doing or why I want to "disfigure myself". I gave up smoking when I realised that for me it was a form of self harm and slow suicide - this doesn't feel the same at all, quite the reverse.
Maybe there are worse things to do than take charge of what is done to ones body for the first time in ones life perhaps, and choose something at times of great significance to remind and represent the things that truly matter when so much else is all around underlining how bad, ugly, wrong, miserably unworthy you are to the majority of society. I looked a long time before starting and found, both times, someone I trusted with the skills and the vision to create on my skin something I will live and die with. So if you're going for it, don't choose lightly or by criteria that matter less to your long term satisfaction than how cheaply or quickly it can be shown off.
And yes in some jobs there are still people who will judge by appearance not by deeper meaning, so decide whether that matters and where to put your tattoo. More and more folk have something or are thinking of it but not done so due to fear or pain or whatever issues leave them undecided, so it's less of a stigma than it was, but I'm told the rib cage is the most painful area so the most hidden might not be the least often uncovered!
-
some tattoos are really nice and have alot of meaning for the person wearing it. id like something to symbolise my 4 children at some point i just havent worked out what yet. one day....
-
I am right with you ellied
the OP was looking for advice etc but instead we have ended up with a thread overtaken by negative opinions, I dont believe they asked if you had an opinion on tattoos.
And frankly some of the things being said are quite offensive and judgemental. I dont make any judgement s about non inked people so what gives them the right to make judgement s about those of us who are?
Incidentally, I am planning something goat related, perhaps a portrait of my Daisy, my first goat, I just wish she didnt look quite so much like the horned devil associated with satan...lol
-
Four Cats asked this
This will be my first tattoo, so I'm not really sure about it. How it goes and such
I believe she now has all the information needed to decide whether to go ahead with having a tattoo or not, what type to have, where to have it. We are all entitled to our own opinion, and I don't see any of the foregoing as judgemental.
Tattoos are expensive - fact
Tattoos hurt - fact
Tattoos can damage skin - fact
Tattoos are difficult to remove if you change your mind - fact
Tattoos can be in places where they are hidden or not as you please - fact
Tattoos can be seen as statements - aggressive, intimidating or otherwise - fact
We have all expressed views on this and it is now up to Four Cats what she takes from the discussion .
-

Very well said ellied.

Hiya fourcats
I have 4 tattoos. Did they hurt? well the ones near bones did, others just felt a bit like something being dragged on my skin.
In my time I've had both ears pierced 3 times, only wear 2 pairs of earrings now though, I had my nose pierced but that has sealed up and I had my bellybutton pierced but since I had 4 babies wouldnt' even want my belly being seen let alone a piercins so thats long since gone.
Do I care what people think about my tattoos? no, not really. Be prepared for people to feel free to pass judgement on you though if its in a visible place and just have some answers ready ;) Everyone is free to have an opinon same as everyone is free to have a tattoo if they so choose :)
Get recommendations for a tattoo artist, you have to feel comfortable and confident in their work as you are going to be 'wearing' it for a long time. Don't do it as a whim (like I did one of mine and then had to get it altered lol) and hope it all goes well for you :)

bellybutton piercing - been there too :roflanim:

Couple of practical points I didn't mention because I got upset, sorry.
Expense: I pay £50/hour for a top class skin artist whose clients travel across Scotland to get him and has a 3-4 month waiting list. He's in Cupar 8 miles from me so I consider myself fortunate in that regard. He takes a £20 deposit on booking and the rest at the end of each session with the deposit rolling forward til completion, however long it takes. The previous one in Feb 2010 was around £80 total for a 3-4 hour one off and they didn't do it quite as I asked because I wasn't looking as it was done, on their advice. The job was done fast but would be hard to correct to my original design. I took that as educational but the foot part needed redone as it fades faster anywhere the skin is covered and rubbed ie shoes, belts. The guy I go to now, we chat, he draws, I check, he works and it is a real two way creation and we chat more.. Also colour costs more than single black/shading, takes longer and is a matter of choice so think about how much time/money/discomfort you are wanting to invest.
Pain: Strangely I wouldn't say it hurts as much as some untattooed people assume and I anticipated. It is more discomfort but it does get sore overnight the first night, a bit like being scratched at the time and sunburn later. When actually underway, watch and talk to the artist, don't look away and try to ignore what is happening - I don't know why but it is easier if you're interested and more likely to be what you want if you're watching it grow. Also let the first few minutes go by before you assume you'll not manage a long sitting as endorphins kick in and it actually becomes relatively pain free I find. I most recently treated myself to a starting session of 2 hours when I had sold some personal possessions and had a bit spare, and at the end I'd have been willing to sit for another 2 at the end if there were time and cash spare to arrange it! So don't assume the worst and remember all kinds of people get them now, not just hardman types - it's not a feat of stoic endurance of agony above your capacity and fear will make it worse (adrenaline instead of endorphins) so try and relax into it, a good artist will keep you occupied chatting until you get settled.
Also, afterwards, treat it properly and keep it clean/moisturised - ignore anyone that recommends the old cling film treatment as that increases risk of getting infected, that is painful but the worst is trying not to scratch like any superficial wound scabs or aftersun peeling! Avoid bony areas first time around til you know what to expect. And for ladies, something nobody told me, the time of the month is significant to pain sensitivity so check with your artist but I THINK it is avoid tats when ovulating, can't remember and I no longer bother but my redo of the foot was way more pain than the first or any subsequent sessions for that reason.
I hope that this is of more help than my first response and, having recent experience I am more than happy to answer any questions by pm or here, if I had the money I'd probably have more, it's not like I show my body to anyone other than medical professionals these days, and if nothing else it's a conversation starter!
Oops, sorry, one more thing, just an opinion rather than factual this time ;) Don't fall for the trends of the time as they get dated, go for something unique and significant to you, like your animal idea. Tramp stamps, unreadable Chinese symbols, text along the forearm, tribal/celtic armbanding, all a bit like permanently going out with a 1970s hairdo - only if you're really into your retro look! If you're going to make a statement, make it your statement and forget what everyone else is wearing this season - and the next 20-60 seasons..!
-
I am right with you ellied

With you both there.... :sunshine:....and still the response is 'factually' negative according to one poster.......
Is each to their own imo.........I would consider smoking or drinking to excess....and I mean excess having seen the damage it does first hand.....to be self harm yet they seem to be acceptable
Tattooing can be a fad...a trend that people wish to be part of......or it can be a story of someones life......events /people /good or bad that for whatever reason they keep close to them........yes there are those that judge......a fair few on here it would seem.....I think instantaneous judgements are pretty shallow in whatever context.....
I would say...research...think long and hard about what you are considering doing to your body use a good artist on recommendation.......a cheap option can't be scrubbed out...think about its placement....if only to spare yourself some of the discrimination of others.......and good luck whatever you decide :sunshine:
-
"yes there are those that judge , a fair few on here it would seem , i think instantaneous judgements are pretty shallow in whatever context " . lol , yep we all do it don't we ? No offence or dig intended , just thought the above funny , and it proved your point perfectly .
I suppose we could all be MP's , hear one question and then procede to answer a completely different one !
On tattoos , i don't have any , i think they are an abomination but , i have no problem with other people having them , half my family have them and piercings , but i don't want any .
My family know i hate them , but love showing me their latest , knowing the response they will receive . However , i would never say they shouldn't have them , that is completely up to them , and they don't need my permission or for me to like them .
I don't ask them for their permission to do anything , or live the way i do , i just do my own thing , as do they theirs , neither being right nor wrong .
For those that don't like tattoos that's fine , why should they ? For those that want them , that's fine too , it's your body do as you want .
If you do get one , op , i hope you like it , ( just ignore the pain and infection , festering sores and the limbs that fall off , joke ! ) , and good luck .

Marmite springs to mind here :innocent:

Hmmmmm, I'm quite shocked by some of the comments on this thread !
I have tattoo's, they're just part of me and in the same way I wouldn't comment on anyone else's appearance I wouldn't expect anyone to make comment on mine - fact or not :-\
All that aside though, to help with the OP's questions... tattoo's don't hurt unless onto boney areas.
Check out the artist beforehand (and not just the drawings they have - see some of their work 'in the flesh') Consider where you're getting it done - places where there's more movement of the skin take longer to heal.
Colours do tend to fade over time unless you take good care of your tattoo (factor 50 SPF suncream) but I've got a coloured one that was done 21 years ago and it's not changed much, but I prefer black & white now ;)
Good luck whatever you decide - but as you'll have no doubt gathered with this thread, there are a lot of instantly judgmental and prejudiced people out there, you'll need to be prepared to deal with them (or have your tat where you can cover it if need be ;))
-
I do not have any tattoos myself, but have no problem with anyone who has/or wants them....
A friend of mine started off with a small one on her ankle, and to be honest, it looked sore while it was healing, but she has gone on to have numerous other tattoos - rather a lot in my opinion, but its her body, and she enjoys them, so why not?
Another friend had a pic of her horse and his name on her neck, and then she sold the horse!!
-
Lots of answers. I never expected so many, but that's totally cool to me.
@moony I totally agree with you. I know that everyone has their own opinions. I was my opinion a couple of years ago, so that's why I totally agree with you.
@SirDoolb this is kinda interest. A zip tattoo over a scar. Really good idea. Got a scar in my childhood, but never thought what to do with it. :knit:
@shygirl what type of tattoos do you have? If you can share, not pictures, but the idea :farmer:
@doganjo I too wish a beautiful skin, but I have some scars and some acne and many others. A tattoo wouldn't break me already. But that's just me. I have to say I really respect other opinions from people that don't want tattoos.
@Fleecewife I am with you about piercings. Also the genital ones. I would never do that (maybe now, who knows later).
@fiestyredhead331 thanks for your advice. It's interesting how people you don't know (from the internet) can help you out more than friends you know in real life. Thanks again!
@Alistair You have tattoos, but you don't like them?
@ellied thanks for the story. It helped.
Sorry if I missed to reply to some of you. But you all helped me a lot. Thanks for that.

i have a small seahorse on my back/hip and a fairy on my shoulderblade (maybe i should have got a guardian angel but i thought it really pretty). i cant actually see either unless i look in a mirror - neither can anyone else in normal clothes.
it doesnt hurt too much, a bit nippy but nothing compared to labour :roflanim: :roflanim:
i love the idea of a zip, how cool is that. i could put it over my caesarian scar - now that would confuse my kids :roflanim: :roflanim:

Middle aged lady came onto our ward for an abdominal hysterectomy. Gynae Registrar comes to examine her pre-op to find pubes dyed green and just below where the incision would go a tattoo saying "Keep off of the grass" . fab!! ;D
-
@Alistair You have tattoos, but you don't like them?
I have them and luv them, I should have put a :-J thingy at the end
To be honest the only issue I had was that my dragon was the first, and, in retrospect, isn't big enough especially as I have the half sleeve on the other arm, need to get more ink...
-
Tattoos don't age well, like the rest of our skin. I think if you are having a lot of your body covered with them when your young and impressionable you may not be so happy about them when you turn 40. We live in an age of instant gratification and its relatively easy to get them hard and expensive to remove them. I have looked after people who have had them removed at great cost to themselves emotionally and the NHS.
I think if you see the tattoo as apart of the tale of your life, like your children always with you that's fine, I don't like them because they are permanent, its not like dyeing your hair.
-
You could try Jagua temporary tattoos if you wanted to see how you felt about having a tat/wanted to experiment with styles and locations.
It's like henna, only black so more like a real tattoo look - but it's not 'black henna' which some people have a very severe reaction to.
-
I hope I didn't come over as judgemental. What other people do is up to them. I was just expressing my opinion of them which means I don't have anything else to say. I do think the zip idea is clever though. Pity it can't be a real zip if it's a caesarean one, so that it's easier for the next baby.

the older I get (am nearly 44) the less I care what others think of them lol. I'd like more but just can't afford it right now.
-
I have a couple - "tree of life" on one shoulder and a massive "green man" on the other (a christmas present to myself, which I am getting finished tomorrow and will have taken 4 hours in total).
Firstly - I don't find they hurt, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
I am glad I waited until I was a bit older to have them because I knew my mind by the time I did and I chose things I liked, rather than just "looked cool". Tattooing has been part of our culture since the vikings and I imagine will continue to be so. I would, however shy away from having any where I can't cover them because, as you have seen on this thread - the judgemental bigotry tends to come from people who don't have tattoos, have no experience of them and like to make assumptions about people who have them. You tend not to find people who have tattoos judging people who don't have them, even if they regretted their choice.
So; as much as I find the anti-tattoo comments narrow-minded and somewhat offensive - I expected them because idiots like that are everywhere.
-
I like the idea of the green man, couldn't begin to imagine the cost though.
-
I like the idea of the green man, couldn't begin to imagine the cost though.
My tattooist charges £60/hour - so that gives you some idea. Its like any art, I guess - if you liked a picture you might pay that for it.
I might post up a pic when tomorrows session has healed up a bit. :)
-
I've got a welsh dragon on my shoulder. I'd wanted one for years but didn't actually have it until I was thirty. It did hurt a bit more than I thought but was bearable. I've told a few youngsters that every male baby born in Wales had them in the 60's to prove you were Welsh.
-
Hello to everyone! After about 2 months I finally got my tattoo (not a horse, but something similar, a bear (http://www.tattooneed.com/bear-tattoo-meanings/) :tree:). I want to thank all of you, but also answer to some of you.
@honeyend I know tattoos don't age well and I was afraid of it. I got a small tattoo. For the moment my body is not covered in tattoos. I hope I won't get covered in tattoos, altough I like them a lot.
In the meantime, who got more tattoos? What type?
@SteveHants loved your story and tattoo ideas.
@philcaegrug cool tattoo idea. I am also interested in dragons, mostly Chinese.
Thanks everyone :bunny:
-
I have 3… i did make the mistake of having a name put on..(ex wife) but got that covered over ..
they don't make and difference to my day… they don't keep me up at night..and i have never worried what other people think…as i never interfere with their business ;D
you live once…..

Well, where are the pics then Fourcats? ;D

I am thinking about a :bee: on each knee
Then I would be the bees knees. :bee:
:bee:
:bee:
:bee:
:bee:
:bee:
-
Eek I couldnt have that mojocafam I have a fear of bees and wasps so would spend the summer slapping my legs!
-
I like them, I like the abstract designs more than the I Love Mum type though. I wish they'd been more acceptable or I'd been braver when I was younger. My skin isn't up to it now and it's been stretched from me being overweight so long so I'm unlikely to get one now but if I did I'd get a bicep armlet in some sort of celtic knot design.
-
Hope you'll show us the bear when it's finished. I'd love a bear but I need to complete the tree I am slowly getting done, as and when I can afford it and then 3 months waiting for an appt usually. I was all set to get a bear paw a couple years ago but then someone told me it had connotations of lesbianism in North America :o and as I'm not that way inclined I opted to change my mind and went for the tree instead.. ;)
My birthday present to myself from a couple weeks ago is another session on Monday coming, first I've managed since December so it's looked a bit odd meantime but nobody sees my legs this time of year anyway ;) First time I've booked a full (4 hour) session, 2 has been my max til now, but it seems the right time to be adding a few leaves or at least a catkin and some buds perhaps ;)
Anyway, anyone that knows what a wuss I am will know the pain level isn't dire if I am booking 4 hours at a time having experienced 2 more than once..
@SteveHants I'd love to see the tree of life design too
and @mojocafa I love that idea, even if you're kidding, what a buzz ;)

I've got a celtic hare surrounded by ivy leaves on my left upper arm from shoulder to elbow and a bat and a peacock feather fan on my right upper arm from shoulder to elbow. Both arms need finishing but that's for when I've got time and money. I usually get them done during the winter. My tattooist is a very interesting lady who used to pilot Boeings!

Funny i found this thread, since i'm in deep researches for a tattoo idea.
Looking into celtic symbols myself. Already decided about the artist, it's hard picking up something to get tattooed though. I also know the place, on the back of my neck. 8)
Great art works you got there, guys.
