Title: Help please - chicken shed wheels
Post by: Kitchen Cottage on January 24, 2014, 11:09:41 am
There is a chicken shed on next doors land which will hold about 30 birds and I've swapped for 1 deer leg, a coop to hold his 4 hens and a leg of pork  ;D

I now have to move it.... It has a square axle on it but no wheels... I used to have the wheels on another shed..but loaned them to some barsteward who didn't return them.....

Options are

1. take it apart.  I don't mind this because it needs roof work and new lids to the nesting boxes and it may just be easier.
2.  see if my friendly farmer can lift it with a tractor for me (my straps aren't long enough.
3.  buy new wheels.

Option 3 is best for me, cos then it is portable and I can move it around.

I don't really know what these are called though and "shed wheels that fit in square axle" isn't helping.

Does anyone know where I can get these?

If it was me I would go for option 2 then do option 1 and 3 at home at your leisure.
EBay have cast wheels but they are expensive. There are companies around that do wheels, for wheelbarrows, trolleys etc.

I surfed some more and I think I need axle stuffs and wheels, which is about £100.  I'm happy with that and will remove the roof and some rotten wood in the laying bits but otherwise, its in very good nick.  A few rat holes but I always like patchwork ;)

Screw fix and the like are good for things like this. In fact our horse field shelter has removable wheels which are from screwfix or somewhere like that, tho the stable company do manufacture the square bracket made to measure for their shelters.

I've seen them on ebay but they all says "weldable"... I need to ring someone.  Screwfix catalogue isn't much help...

Our mobile coops are all on pairs of wheels with a 1"solid round axle. I use plastic wheelbarrow wheels with no bearings but you can get better that have roller bearings built in. These are heavy coops. Each side panel must be 30Kg plus the chassis, floor roof and nest boxes. Perhaps 250 -300Kg all in. It takes two to lift them at the handle end.

Bit puzzled about square axle stubs. How do you fit a wheel to them?

They are just for the older type square wheels !
