Title: Retrospectively Registering Boar

Hi
We have recently bought two OSB Boar weaners.  We were unsure whether we were going to use one of them to breed or keep both just for fattening.  When  we collected them the breeder said that we could charge a stud fee for one as he would make a good boar but I know that although birth notified neither are registered.  We currently keep saddlebacks for fattening but hoped to start breeding OSB's and so have ordered OSB gilts for later this year.  Is it too late to register our boar weaner and if not can we not use him to breed with registered gilts?
Help, we have kept pigs for meat but this is our first foray into breeding and we don't want to get it wrong.  We dearly love our boar weaner and if we can keep him to start breeding it would be wonderful.

If the Boar is birth registered you should be o.k., just contact the BPA.

Hi, thanks for your help. Our boars are tagged etc.  What questions should I ask the breeder, do you think she will object to registering our boar now, we will pay her the difference to register him.  To be honest at the moment we only want to breed for meat but am I correct in saying that we could not sell any resulting weaners for freezer if he was not registered?

Ideally you should ask the breeder to register them for you, and pay the costs.  I am unsure if you can register them yourself unless you are a member of BPA.  Rules change to suit sometimes.!!!!

You don't need to have a registered animal to sell it.
You do however need both a male and female registered to sell registered offspring. You will also need to he a member of the BPA (britishpigs) who are thebody responsible for pedigree pigs.

It may be worth looking at their website for more info.

Thank you all for all your help.

After much discussion we have decided to go with our breeder's advice and send both our current boars off for freezer and get registered unrelated gilts and a registered boar so we can do everything `properly'.

We love our pigs.  We have kept ducks and chickens but have wanted to breed pigs  :pig:   for a while and now we have some land its very exciting.  We have had saddleback weaners for meat but are thrilled we will be able to breed OSB's.
