Title: Advice for ear tagging
Post by: Nicapig on January 20, 2014, 10:01:22 pm
My two pigs are off to slaughter this weekend and I have to ear tag them. I have the tags etc just wondered if anyone had any advice as to the best way to go about it. My girls are 22 weeks and quite big with an acre of woods to roam freely around so there isn't really a spot where I can pen them in.
I guess I'm wondering if there is a certain spot on the ear to put the tag/ or a spot to avoid.
Are they likely to get angry?! Not sure how else to put it!!
Is there any thing else I should be aware of before just going for it?
I haven't been looking forward to doing this but am determined to complete all aspects of pig rearing myself so any advice will be gratefully received.
Thanks

We do ours when they're in the trailer ready to go. Just be positive, don't hesitate and give the pliers a good firm squeeze. The pigs might squeal or jump slightly but they might not notice at all. Alternatively do it while they're eating in which case they probably won't notice. Try to avoid any of the veins in the ear. Once you've done a couple it's very easy.
