Title: opinion?
Post by: Jamie12 on January 20, 2014, 11:15:19 am
I have been offered some 3 crop texel x Suffolk ewes in lamb to a texel. I'm wondering peoples opinions on this cross?. I
M new to all this and hadn't thought you should cross the two as purebreds

My immediate thought was 'lambing problems'.

I had thought there may be difficulties!

My one and only Suffolk x txl ewe (and her daughters of a Shetland ram incidentally too!) had ongoing lambing problems when crossed to a Texel. So unless you are experienced I would start with easier lambing options

Texels are notorious in these parts for needing assistance at lambing time.  Partly due to the conformation (tilt) of the ewe's pelvis and partly due to wide skull and shoulders and short neck.
