What are the policies for insurance for selling produce at farm gate (honesty box),Does a standard public liability insurance cover little mishaps such as someone tripping over,or with todays make a claim culture for something ridiculous like slipping on a broken egg or poking them selves in the eye with a carrot?? :-J

I don't have insurance for my egg sales.....the buyers are actually standing on the lane when they buy my eggs - so perhaps they could claim off the Council?!!

We've got public liability for all our sales, including selling from the gate. It's useful to have and a necessity if you're going to maybe sell at farmers' markets or similar in the future.
-
Maybe it depends on what you sell 'over the gate'?
We have market traders liability insurance to cover us for markets etc

We've got public liability to cover us at markets but I don't think it covers any other sales activity.

Thanks for the replies,my son only wants to make a little pocket money by selling eggs, veg, and some small bags of firewood.I have a small holders insurance for the likes off taken animals to slaughter or breaking out onto highway, but if I need to add cover for selling produce there wont be money to be made. :-J

Every farm I pass round here is selling eggs, honey, firewood, plants etc. at the gate - like you say, if we all had to have insurance, we may as well not sell anything. Just a thought - if there is a shop nearby, they may not like "competition" as such and inform the Council. I have been selling eggs for years at the gate, and never had any problems (except for ladies falling out over the last box of eggs a few times!!)
