OK, 1 thing at a time, but........if you were in charge of the world as it is today, what would you do to start making it a better place for us all?
it might be changing the rules of football, ensuring free access to medicine for everyone, but what would you change - and as nothing is free, how would you pay for it!!!!
for me (and it's not the top of my list) i'd charge tescos/asda/retail parks for parking, reduce town centre leases/rates, ban charity shops from town centres, improve public transport and parking and encourage small retailers to sort out their shops and bring us back to the high streets

Oops...my first attempt at a response got very un PC...so I deleted it...but I can't help thinking that the world (at least my bit of it) was a much better place in the 50/60's, when there was a lot of work around and finding a job was not difficult...the introduction and advancement of technology has all but destroyed the labour force and computers or machines have replaced the men and women who used to make/assemble the things we used...unemployment has robbed people of the sense of belonging and pride they once had as a worker...and media/television advertising feeds on envy to encourage people to want to buy something they can't afford...thus they borrow money they can't pay back and the world ends up in the mess we are in today!
If I could change anything to make the world a better place, I think I would have halted the advancement of technology in the 50's...how sad is that? And before the debate gets going...yes I am aware of the advantages that technology has given us and the effect that not having it would have on today's world and economy...but believe me the people in my bit of the world were a lot happier in the 50/60's than they are now!

how about apprenticships for all those kids who are coerced into higher education when a vocation would suit them better?
-
I might ban religion altogether, all of them would become HELPers at HELP Shops. Here's how it would work.
Turn all Churches and other religious buildings into HELP SHOPS
Everyone loves shopping.
They all would have to go at least twice a week to help someone - be it a lift, homework, diy, do their shopping, cook them a meal, babysit the kids for an hour, give a talk on social skills, how to write a CV, all money collected would go to heating, furnishing it comfy, and computer and internet connection for education purposes only and communication to the people who live on their own and need help.
They would have rules - social control rules and morals, but not preach from any ancient books, and the main thing would be to have round robins on how to improve things locally for the future generations, using tools from quality training and marketing industries to improve quality of life and sales of locally grown produce in the area.
The help shop would sell the locally produced stuff to the locals at a fair price, with a fair profit margin and you could swap produce with others in your own, or other help shops.
There would be a 500 year wall planner on the wall and everyone would have to think of future impacts before anything was changed - they would also look at future goals for the area, and have at least three plans to work from A,B and C depending on what the weather might be like in the future, so that no one had all their eggs in one basket - and to try and avoid crop failure or other disasters that would affect the local people.
Governments would not tax or rate the help shops, and would maintain the buildings if necessary, so that each community had its own centre or centres. All races and all religions would have to work together and learn how to communicate - swap cultural ideas and work ways, but belief would be put to one side whilst the here and now - and future of the children would be the belief to have.
The kids would walk dogs, wash up for people, learn how to weed gardens and plant, and the socially accepted norms of the community would be taught to them through reasoning and explanation, no one would be able to say "because I said so" No Bully's, no boss, reasoning and respect, with helpers of each age group advising and organising - using peoples skills.
Too big I know - and probably lots of pitfalls I haven't seen - but it might be a start to getting community and family values back on track ::) ::) ::)

I would control the extortionate wages paid to footballers! They might be better than your sunday team players, but think of all the good that money could do!
And 'green up' the towns and cities with proper plants, not just those pointless statue things you see everywhere.
And overhaul the care and education system, less cheifs and more (oops, shouldnt say that!)
Like the sound of a HELP shop, though religion is a lifeline for some people...
Oh, and ban puppy farms, sweat shops, and 'celebraties' who brand everything from perfume to goodness knows what!
-
Set up treadmill stations to generate green electricity. Folk could book on either by choice to lose weight / get fit, as an alternative to prison (where appropriate) or to supplement their benefit income. Open 24/7, personal accounts; any income tax free and outwith the benefit system.
-
Could I add ban sweat shops where kids are forced to work for slave wages, ban pig prisons - sorry intensive pork rearing farms, and any form of child exploitation.

ha ha ha ha ha ha
I love it
I've always thought we put too many people in prison - there has to be a form of house arrest we can implement, a nice wee tag and if they want to receive benefits/food etc they have to do 8 hours a day on the treadmill
the tag would keep them in the house and the treadmill would leave them too tired to do anything they shouldn't be doing

Now there's something for Esther to get her head around...she'll get my vote!
Well thought out Rosemary

I would give the population of a whole continent some brains. After reading what is going through the press about Obama I am seriously scared of them now (after the election I thought there was hope). And I would ban the shareholder system in the "free" economy. People who own parts of a company actually have to work for it... :&>

I thought for a long time about this and I think I would remove all cars and just have fire engines police cars and ambulances - perhaps HGVs, but only one or two per company.
Why?
1. Keep people fitter
2. Bring back the use of horses - especially now so many are being abandoned :horse:
3. Ensure work remains more local - hence less long journeys
4. Use the rivers again
5. Probably should be number one, but less polution
6. Less road accidents - may have a few people trampled on of course
7. Less noise levels
8. Build on some of the roads and stop hacking into the green belt
9. Be prepared before we actually run out of fuel
10. Stop this mad status thing about cars.
Well that's my thoughts.
Also ban the common light bulb!! Oh yes we did that yesterday ::)

Hi there. I am a new member so please excuse me butting in but it such a fun conversation.
Horses on roads-yes-but we need people to collect the manure for growing the veg. Perhaps the prisoners could be released from the treadmills producing energy-purely on health reasons of course-to scoop it up and deliver it to allotments?

H, Elizabeth
You may be new but you've got the idea ;D Welcome!

No cars would be great if public transport was cheap/free. I have managed several times without a car but you can get a bit cut off, even with a horse!! :horse:
-
We need to all start breeding, taming and selling Giant Turtles -
If this rain keeps up they will be the best, cheapest alternative to the car,
and will swim through the floods, no problem.

Good idea...and in stead of scrapage, we could have Turtle Soup :yum:

Yeah - good idea - Turtle Soup
And we could put all the old shells at the top of fence posts in the hen pens to
shelter them from the rain or sunshine too - more recycling - and very GREEN
