Title: Ram/goat
Post by: Orinoco on December 30, 2013, 11:37:16 am
Hi

I think I have a problem, the Ram has just mounted the goat (about 9 month old pygmy and older Ouessant Ram), I got the goats to seperate off the Ram with and didn't expect him to be soo interested in them and the goat was very interested in him.

Not sure what if anything I should do, the sheep and goats are the same size but the goat is quite young, I have put him in the stable by himself for the moment (he is not happy about that).

Words of advice would be useful now.

Thanks

Firstly, the fact that the goat is young - I took on a pygmy female that had been served by her father, and she kidded at just a year old. Its not ideal, but yes, it does happen.

My neighbour, a sheep farmer used to run his female goat (kept for milk for orphan lambs) with his ram, and it did kid x with a ram, although I never saw the kids (or lambs) but he assured me it did.

If you are worried about the goat and ram x, you can take her to the vet, and get her jabbed to stop her becoming in kid, but you need to do it pretty quick.

I expect the geeps and shoats will have a superb taste all their own - you'll be filling a niche  ;D

oh no that was too funny!
our ram is in the field with our goats (4 of which are in/out of season and not been served yet!) but they seem more interested in him than the other way round but I did catch my castrated billy kid trying to mount his mum when she was in season at the start of the week..... ::)
