Thought I would show you a couple of pics of the felt hat I made. Its all wet felt.
The shape is a bit weird but for a first attempt I am quite pleased with it.

Fab ..... I must have a go at felting
-
That is something I would really like to do - well done Bionic - can we see it modelled!!
Really I think it's fab and with all the fleece I have I really need to do something with it - I don't think I would dye as I have various shetland colours and castlemilk so would provide a good natural set of base colours.
Did you go to a class or learn from a book - I've watched a few youtube video's but still not set suds to wool.

That's splendid Sally. What did you use as a mould?
-
No, you can't see it modelled. When it's on my head it looks more like a German helmet. All that's missing is the swastika ;D .
I did go to one class where we made a wall hanging but since then have been dabbling, using the internet. I did mention to OH that a felting book for Christmas would go down well but I think I may have been too late with the request :(

That's excellent Sally

A while back I bough an antique hat last from fleabay but not sure it's the right thing to use for welt felting, but maybe I just need more experience. To make it keep it's shape I painted the inside of the hat with a mix of pva glue and water.

I love the hat, Sally. I haven't done a lot of wet felting yet as it tends to make my hands ache but I want to do more.
-
Brilliant! The one and only time I made a felt hat it looked like something Wurzel Gummage would wear. It went in the fancy dress box.

Lesley, I have heard others say the same thing about aching hands. I don't have that problem but get fed up keep rolling it so when I have had enough I just cover it up and leave it wet until I want to do some more. I started the hat and then left it for a couple of weeks before going back to it. I just wet it some more and off I go again. It doesn't seem to make any difference. You might be able to the same. Just wet felt in short bursts when your hands are up to it.
-
I'll try that, Sally. It is the rolling that causes the trouble. I was making a bag and got so fed up theat I threw it in the washing machine. It's quite nice now.

That's the beauty of wet felting, isn't it? Just walk away if you ache or have something else that takes priority. Went to one class and hooked now.

My wife went for a straw hat and got felt.

Think of it more as a Downton style Lady Mary cloche rather than a German helmet!

Oh thank you Louise. A Downton style hat sounds much nicer :)

You are soOOO talented Sally!!! ;D
The hat might look like a Kaiser Willhelmet (and I'm sure it looks lovely)….. but the detail and balance on those flowers is something else. Beautiful. You have a real touch.
