Title: Knitting - advice needed please - pic added
Post by: Bionic on December 14, 2013, 09:06:24 am
I am knitting a pair of chunky boot socks and the instructions say

"Knit to 1 stitch before end of round, wrap and turn, then flip the sock inside out and knit back around the same round. When you get to the wrapped stitch, knit the wrap together with the stitch and continue"

I've not come across this 'wrap' thing before. Is it as simple as wrapping the yarn round the needle?  :knit:
Attached are the chunky boot socks I made for my OH

It's a new one on me too sally

You've got me twitching now to get back to some chunky knitting  :knit: - I think I need a break from my cross-stich now - too intricate to be able to concentrate on the TV this time of year  :xmaswindow:

Yup, that's exactly what it is.

Wrap on one round and then knit together with the next stitch on another is one of the techniques for making the shaping of a heel - the wrap each end creates the triangle, the knit together closes the hole left by the wrap.

Thank you Sally. I knew someone here would come to my rescue.

I am using some Romney that I had spun and forgotten and so far am loving the effect. They might be a Christmas present for OH or my sister but I may not be able to part with them  ;D

Yes, just wrap the yarn round and do exactly as the pattern says re knit together etc. You're doing the heel, yes? The wrapped stitch is a technique used in short rows to avoid having a row of holes at the turns.

I'm not at the heels yet. This is a cuff at the top of the sock which is why you then turn the sock inside out. You then fold down the cuff at the point where you change direction.

If I ever finish  :knit:  them I will post a pic.

My understanding of wrap in short rows is when you get to the wrap bit, bring the yarn forward, turn, take the yarn to the back and carry on as per pattern instructions. I did lots of short rows when knitting a Christmas tree! Hope this helps. There must be a video on You tube!

Trying to picture this. Is it like a yarn over?

I am an expert now Dans having done it several times this evening. It isn't the same as a yarn over. Look at utube if you get the the chance. It gives you a better idea.

Interesting technique. Not one I'd come across before but useful to know. Thanks, Sally.
