Title: sheep scaning
Post by: bigchicken on December 09, 2013, 09:21:32 pm
Never had my sheep scanned to see how many lambs they are carrying found a chap who can do it for a fiver each as I have only eight,is this a fare price and when would be the best time to scan them. Rams went in with them on the 5th Nov.

I've had between 25 and 30 ewes scanned most years for around £30 all in. Likely a better rate as other customers in the area to make travelling worthwhile for our lady scanner. Scan at about 80 days. Go by the first in-lamb. Any longer than 80 days and the scanner finds it hard to tell whether twins or triplets.

Scan at about 90days after rams in,   99.5% accurate if ewes have no feed  overnight .    £40 seems fair to me

We paid £30 plus a small amount per ewe. We use a lasie from Dollar.

I think the earliest they can accurately scan is 55 days after the tup comes out - it is the stage of pregnancy that allows the accurate scan; ideally between 55 and 75 days pregnant.

You can scan from as early of 35 days for a yes or no answer to being in lamb and not how many they are carrying. Our scanner likes 70-90 days and I think that's a good price!

Sorry to jump on the thread.

Does anyone know a scanner that would do 40 ewes in East Lothian?

I have a couple of goats who the billy visited mid-august (mini-break-out!) - the rest he went in with at the  beginning of October.  If I get the scanner in, is it dangerous for the possible 2 who I think are in kid from the August visit to be scanned late?

No there is absolutely no danger. It is done externally for sheep and goats and the picture is produced by ultrasound.
