Title: Dont forget your pour ons,
Post by: tizaala on December 03, 2013, 02:08:28 pm
As we descend into the darker days of winter the lice season is upon us ,so get the ivermectins out or Coopers spot on to nip it in the bud before they do damage. they don't like the Summer months with ultra violet rays, these are a winter pest . It doesn't take a lot of them to drag a goat down with anemia through loss of blood and shortage of protein as these things feast on them. So be aware of loss of weight despite eating well, pale gums , staring coat ( like worms)  . have a look through the coat and look for the little sods , like headlice in children , can be red or a blueish colour.

I've just done a blanket treatment for mange with Cydectin injections - will that have any effect on external parasites?

Cydectin can be used for ticks and lice also, any of the bloodsucking parasitic insects. With lice you need to repeat pour-ons after a month as the nits hatch out , a louse population is capable of just multiplying rapidly in a short time , and they love dark environments.

Today I saw a magpie perched on the back of one of my girls. Could this be a sign that she has mites? Do magpies pick insects off goats?

Glad it's not a sign of mites.
