Title: Pig arc / sheep shelter
Post by: john and helen on November 22, 2013, 05:04:53 pm
Do any of you incorporate, your shelter / Arc as a paddock divider, ?
i am sure i seen a video where a pig arc had doors either end , i am sure it was rosemary's and dans ?

I had a play around and wondered if this would be a good idea or not

whats your thoughts ?

I have had that in the past. I had a ark that was in the dividing fence but it was accessable from both paddocks at the same time so basically 2 arks back to back but built as one. Hope that makes sense.

Hi BB, yes that makes sense,

I guess i am just looking for a way to incorporate 1 shelter without having to move it , for two paddocks,

ile do the same with the two pig paddocks,

We don't have a pig ark like that but we have installed a sheep/horse field shelter which has an entrance in each field and a central divider wall that can swing back to be flush against the back wall. The entrances both have stable doors so can also be shut. This means that we can use it for the horses (who can't share a field due to one of them being a riggy aggressive type but like to kiss over the divider), bit also use it for the sheep for lambing in the spring (it has extra long big hit and miss ventilation slats in the back wall so plenty of air circulation for sheep).

 John,
How about siting the arc in the fences with a door at each end and then having a Kissing type gate arrangement  at each door so you can divert the animals into one of four paddocks . If you don't under stand let me know & i'll do a sketch for you

I can understand that david, and yes, I like the idea,  one question… what would be the smallest area you could comfortably put 5 sheep in , and how long before putting into another paddock,

if i made 4 small paddocks of 3/4 of a acre could i graze each paddock for a 45 day stint then move on to the next paddock,

this would give me a 6 month circulation , lets not forget, to start with, i will be rearing for the freezer,
more than likely 2 sheep for slaughter, after that, depending on how things go..i would like to try to breed with the remaining  3,

at this stage, i am totally guessing… or instead of creating 4 paddocks , would strip grazing be a better option, my only thoughts with that is..would  the original graze  have time to recover ? or would you stick electric fencing between the old graze and the 3rd graze ?
