Our maran hen has successfully hatched out 2 chicks :excited: She finally brought them out to the big wide world today so we had proof positive that there were some chicks - after being teased with possible reports of cheeping being heard, but impossible to get past a very defensive broody to confirm!
Over the last 3 days I have removed 15 eggs and 1 dead chick (looks like it just never got going after coming out of the shell :( ) so Demi (the hen) had been sitting on up to 18 eggs! This might have been the cause of some of the problems, the other 2 laying hens were really adamant they wanted to lay in the broody nest and in hindsight I should have prevented it which would have meant the original eggs would have had better care.
We have 1 black and 1 goldie chick - same combination as the other 2 chicks that Demi's sister Copper successfully hatched 2 months ago  As for the sexes, I have no idea as yet, though the goldie chick looks like it has the black back stripe of a female legbar , but we shall see.

It's getting very cold, hope they feather up enough to get through the winter. Very late hatching. Love to see progress photos.
